Utica, NY – Alex Puglisi '14, Ashley Palmer '16 and
Alex Andrade '13 each helped out in big ways for EC Softball leading the team to a 3-2 10th inning victory over Alfred University on Friday at Greenman Field. The Soaring Eagles improve to 24-12 and move onto the second day of the Empire 8 Softball Tournament. The Saxons fall to 23-17 and are now eliminated from the tournament.
Alfred came out ready getting on the board in the bottom of the second taking a 2-0 lead. EC was not able to get anything going until the top of the sixth when
Andrade hit a two out rally single.
Palmer then stepped up to the plate and hit a two-run bomb over the left field fence to keep EC alive and tie the game at 2-2. The next three and half innings would go scoreless as
Puglisi and Alfred's Jessica O'Sullivan were locked in on the mound.
In the top of the 10th EC was able to break through. Starting off the rally was
Katie Dore '15 who hit a single to left field. After
Bean hit a sacrifice bunt to advance
Dore to second,
Andrade stepped up to the plate hitting a single to left field scoring
Dore on the play. The Soaring Eagles were now up 3-2 and
Puglisi knew what she had to do. Even though the Saxons would pose a threat to score,
Puglisi stayed strong to close out the victory.
Puglisi pitched all 10 innings allowing three hits, zero earned runs and three walks, while striking out 10. O'Sullivan pitched all 10 innings for the Saxons allowing 10 hits, three earned runs and one walk, while striking out six.
Andrade was unreal from behind the plate hitting 4-for-5, while
Puglisi also hit well going 2-for-4 from the box.
The EC Softball team will return to action tomorrow when they face off with host Utica College at 11:00 a.m. for a chance to advance to the Empire 8 Softball Championship Game.
