Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's tennis team suffered a 0-9 loss in their season opener against Empire 8 powerhouse Ithaca College. The loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 0-1 on the year and 0-1 in Empire 8 play while the win improves the Bombers to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 in conference play.
Elmira would come out battling in their first match of the year, playing with an exorbitant amount of energy, but the energy was not enough to get by the eight-time defending Empire 8 Conference champions. EC started the match by dropping all three doubles matches to Ithaca by the scores of 3-8, 2-8, and 0-8.
Singles play was similar to doubles play as all six matches went in favor of the Bombers.
Ayaka Yoshino '16 put up a fight against Allison Vizgaitis '15 as she was the last to leave the court, but she ultimately lost 1-6, 4-6.
Kristi Chanda '17, in her Elmira College debut, gave her opponent a scare in the first set, losing it 4-6, but adjustments made by her opponent, Jodi Grosberg '17, led to a 0-6 second set.
Elmira will return to action with hopes of a different outcome this Sunday, September 8, 2013 when they host fellow E8 member St. John Fisher College. The match is scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
