Mendon, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team had a good showing on the first day of the Flower City Invitational, going 1-1 in the highly competitive tournament. EC dropped their opening match against Hobart College before snapping a 14 match losing streak to Empire 8 Conference rival St. John Fisher College, 5-3.

Elmira put up a fight in the opening round of play as they took on Hobart College. EC would trail early against the Statesmen, dropping all three doubles matches to enter singles play with a 3-0 deficit. However, Elmira's first doubles team of Sam Pine '14 and Keith Bujak '15 showed promise as they lost in a close one, 8-4. EC would be unable to claim any singles matches as they fell to the Statesmen 9-0.

EC's second match of the day would be much more competitive than the first as they took on a familiar foe in St. John Fisher College. The Soaring Eagles could not have asked for a better start against the Cardinals as EC swept the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.

In singles, the Cardinals staged a comeback by winning three matches but a win by second year standout Satchal Waters '16 kept Elmira in the driver's seat at 4-3. With the match on the line, it would come down to Pine and Scott Ferron '16 at the fifth and sixth positions respectively.

Pine and Ferron would find themselves in a battle as both matches went to a third set. However, EC's experience would prove to be a key factor in today's match as Pine put to good use his four years of experience to clinch the match for the Soaring Eagles. With the win, Elmira snaps a 14 match losing streak to the Cardinals, dating back to April 15, 2000.
