Pine Valley, NY --
Three first period goals and a career-tying performance from rookie goaltender, Sal Magliocco '17 lifted the Elmira College men's ice hockey team to a 3-2 victory over No. 10 Oswego State. The win is EC's third in a row and it snaps a nine game losing streak to the Lakers.  Also coming to an end tonight was Oswego State's ten game unbeaten streak, a stretch that started back on November 23, 2013.

The Soaring Eagles did something no other team has been able to do against the Lakers this season, score first. Carter Shinkaruk '16 wasted little time getting EC on the board as the forward scored 28 seconds into the first period to give Elmira a 1-0 lead. Shinkaruk's backhand finish over the goalie's shoulder was the sophomore's seventh of the year and the second time in three games that he has scored in the first minute of the game, the other coming against SUNY Geneseo on January 11th. Tommy Sumi '16 and Josh Burnell '15 picked up assists on the play.

Oswego State's high-scoring offense began applying pressure on the Soaring Eagle defense and Magliocco, but the rookie held strong, making a handful of acrobatic saves to keep EC in front.

The Purple and Gold then went on the offensive and were able to push the lead up to three behind two goals in a 59 second span. The first of the goals was scored by Dylan Herold '14 who cleaned up a rebound in front of the net with a flick over Oswego State's Matt Zawakzki's stick. Nick Angelo '16 set up the rebound opportunity with a shot from the slot that caromed off Zawakzki's pad. Andrew Ciampicini '15 was also credited with an assist on the goal. Not only did EC make it a 2-0 game with the goal, but a Lakers penalty following the score put Elmira's number one ranked power play unit into action for the first time in the contest.

The Purple and Gold capitalized on the man up opportunity 59 seconds later as Burnell fed Greg Whittle '16 in the open area in front of the net allowing Whittle to fire an uncontested wrister at the goalie. The shot carried over the goalie's stick and hit the back of the net to give EC a 3-0 lead. Nick Owen '17 picked up his second career assist on the score. Despite being outshot 16-8 in the period, the Soaring Eagles carried a 3-0 lead into the first intermission.

The two teams failed to record a goal in the second period as Magliocco and new Laker goalie, Justin Gilbert, kept the two offenses at bay. EC was again outshot in the period, 15-8, but the Purple and Gold continued to maintain a three-goal advantage heading into the final stanza.

The Lakers broke through the Soaring Eagle defense in the third period for a pair of goals to cut EC's lead to one. Matt Galati and Kenny Neil scored goals 46 seconds apart from one another, both on the power play, to make it a 3-2 game with 14:55 to play. The Purple and Gold held strong over the final 14-plus minutes to secure the 3-2 win.

Magliocco tied his career high with 42 saves on the night, while eight different skaters recorded a point in the game. Oswego State held a 44-26 shot advantage on the night, marking the largest shot differential this season.

The Soaring Eagles will head out on the road for yet another Tuesday night game when they travel to Fredonia State for their second matchup of the year against the Blue Devils. EC came out on top in the previous matchup, 5-0, on November 19th. Tuesday's game is scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
