Ithaca, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team suffered a 9-0 setback on the road this afternoon to Empire 8 competitor Ithaca College. With the loss, Elmira falls to 5-7 with a 2-4 mark in the Empire 8 Conference.
Ithaca took an early 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles matches and would carry that momentum into singles as they clinched the match with wins at fourth and second singles. The Bombers eventually won the remaining four singles contests, but not without a fight.
Elmira's lone Class of 2014 member,
Sam Pine '14, lost a tight one at third singles, dropping both sets by just a single break at 6-3, 7-5.
Satchal Waters '16 also had a close match, losing the first set 7-5 before being bested in the second, 6-2.
The most competitive singles match of the afternoon came at the first position as
Pavle Vashakidze '16 fell in a three-set battle. Vashakidze took the first set 6-3 before falling in the second set 6-2. With the match already decided, a super tie-breaker was played in lieu of a third set. A good effort was put forth by Vashakidze in the super-breaker, but he would come up short, falling 10-6.
The Soaring Eagles will be back on the courts on Friday, April 25th for a 4:00 p.m. match against Houghton College in Houghton, NY.
