Nazareth Sneaks Past Elmira With A Pair of Wins

Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College Softball team (4-10, 1-5 E8) fell to Nazareth College (7-11, 2-4) in a pair of Empire 8 Conference games today. EC fell 4-1 in the first game of the day and went on to drop the second game, 5-2.
 
Alex Puglisi '14 pitched all seven innings of the first game and tallied six strikeouts while allowing only five hits while Emilee Rogers '14 also tossed a complete seven innings in the second leg of today's doubleheader, striking out seven batters..
 
Offensively, Emily Carlin '17 led the Soaring Eagles by going 3-4 at the plate today, including a RBI double in game one that scored EC's lone run of the game. Ashley Palmer '16 tripled in game two, driving in both of Elmira's runs.
 
Game One – Elmira 1, Nazareth 4

During the first inning, both teams advanced a runner to third base but were unable to capitalize on the scoring opportunity as neither team would register a run after the first inning.
 
The Golden Flyers would find the scoreboard first in the second inning. With two outs and runners on first and second, Meg DeMario of Nazareth hit a double to right center that would score both runs. The inning would end when the DeMario got into a pickle between on her way to third base allowing the Soaring Eagles to tag her out.
 
Neither team would record a runs until the bottom of the sixth inning when Mikayla Bean '14 reached on an error with two outs allowing Carlin to step up and smack a double to deep right center field to scoring Bean to cut the Nazareth lead to 2-1. After Megan Anderson '15 singled down the left field line, Nazareth called on Mary Greco on relief duty to help get the Golden Flyers out of the jam with ground out to second base.  
 
In the top of the seventh, the Golden Flyers quickly put the first three batters on base and with a pair of EC errors, Nazareth scored two runs to take a 4-1 lead.
 
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Jacquelyn Heggie '16 belted a double down the left field line to try and get a comeback started, but Elmira's rally was cut short as the EC women could not get another run on the board before the end of the inning.
 
Game Two- Elmira 2, Nazareth 5

In the bottom of the first inning, Carlin started things with a single up the middle allowing Anderson to single to right field to put Carlin in scoring position. Palmer then stepped up and drove both runs in after smashing a triple over the right fielder's head to take an early 2-0 lead.
 
As neither team would score a run until the top of the sixth inning, Nazareth broke the drought after taking advantage of an error in the top of the sixth inning after a throw to third base was overthrown and scored a run to trail the Soaring Eagles, 2-1.
 
In the top of the seventh inning, the EC women were looking to close the game out with three quick outs. However, two costly errors by the Soaring Eagles allowed Nazareth to put runners on first and second. Nazareth then went on a four-run rally to take a 5-2 lead over the Purple and Gold.
 
Elmira was unable rally in the bottom half of the inning as the Soaring Eagles fell to Nazareth, 5-2.
 
The Soaring Eagles will be back in action tomorrow, April 18th, when the EC women host a doubleheader against Pennsylvania College of Technology. The doubleheader is set to begin at 3:00 p.m.
