Elmira, NY -- Coming off a 7-2 loss to Ithaca College, their first loss of the 2014-15 season, the Elmira College women's tennis team looks to rebound and move back over .500 in Empire 8 play when EC travels to take on Utica College. The match is scheduled for Saturday, September 13th at 1:00 p.m.
Not Since 2004Despite the loss to Ithaca, the Soaring Eagles did something that no EC team had been able to do since 2004, take a point from the Bombers. Ithaca had defeated Elmira by a 9-0 score each of the last nine seasons prior to Wednesday's performance. The last match won by an Elmira player against Ithaca was in 2004 at the first singles spot where Olivia Garcia'05 came away with a 6-3, 6-0 victory.
Double-WinnerMegan Fitzgerald '18 has started her Elmira College career in grand fashion, having yet to take a loss following her sixth singles and third doubles wins over Ithaca. She is the first EC player in over 15 years to win multiple points against the Bombers and improved her personal record to 2-0 in singles and 2-0 in doubles.
Series HistoryIt has been a one-sided affair over the last 14 years as Elmira has a 16-0 record against the Pioneers, which includes two wins in the Empire 8 Tournament. In addition to the perfect record against Utica, the Soaring Eagles have only conceded eight points in the 16 matches.
A Look at the PioneersUtica College enters this weekend of play with a 0-2 record and 0-1 in Empire 8 play after falling to Stevens Tech and Wells College in the season's first two matches. The Pioneers fell 9-0 to the Ducks on September 6th before losing to the Express 7-2 on September 10th. Anastasia Fitzpatric and Doni Look picked-up Utica's two points against Wells, winning at third and fourth singles respectively.
