Elmira, NY -- Coming off a convincing 9-0 victory over Utica College, the Elmira College women's tennis team looks to move to 3-1 in conference play, and 4-1 overall, Thursday afternoon against Houghton College. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. in Houghton, NY.
Just SixThe Soaring Eagles made easy work of the Pioneers in their previous match, giving up a total of six games in the nine matches played. The six games are the lowest number of games conceded in an entire match since the 2003 season, when EC gave up three total games, also against Utica College.
Will She Do It Today?Kayla Fitzgerald '15 has had a strong start to her season, posting a combined 7-1 record in singles and doubles and increasing her career wins to 45. She is just one win behind Krista Heckler '03 for second place all-time, meaning a pair of wins from Fitzgerald today, one in both singles and doubles, would give her sole possession of second place in EC women's tennis history.
Series HistoryThere is not much history between EC and Houghton's tennis programs as this is only the second time that the two programs will meet, the other coming last season. Elmira is 1-0 in the matchup after defeating the Highlanders 9-0 at home in 2013.
A Look at HoughtonThe Highlanders dropped to 2-6 on the season after losing their fourth consecutive match on Monday, falling to Roberts Wesleyan, 9-0. Houghton is also 0-4 in Empire 8 Conference play, losing to Nazareth College, Hartwick College, Stevens Tech, and Alfred University.
Can't Look Past ThemHoughton may not have a conference win yet this season, however, they have played two perennial contenders, Nazareth and Stevens, very tightly in their matches against them. Houghton lost 6-3 to both the Golden Flyers and the Ducks, with the back-end of the singles lineup doing most of the damage. The Highlanders won at fourth and fifth singles against Nazareth and Stevens, with all but one of the four matches ending in straight sets.
Looking AheadFollowing today's match, EC returns home for an Empire 8 match against Hartwick College on Sunday, September 21st at 1:00 p.m.
