Women's Tennis Prepares for Road Tilt Against Alfred

Elmira College at Alfred University
Game DetailsTuesday, Sep. 23 - Alfred, NY - 4:00 p.m.
Elmira, NY -- Fresh off their 8-1 victory over Hartwick College on Sunday, the Elmira College women's tennis team returns to the courts in search of their fourth win in a row this afternoon when travel to Alfred, NY to take on Alfred University. The match is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m.

Another Strong Start
EC is off to their second consecutive 5-1 start, which again has the Purple and Gold off to the best start in over 14 years. A win against Alfred would secure the best start to a season since 1974, when that edition of EC women's tennis started the year 6-0.

Punching Their Ticket
The Soaring Eagles are going for their fifth Empire 8 win of the season when they go up against the Saxons on Tuesday. An EC victory would move the Purple and Gold to 5-1 against conference opponents, and would all but lock up Elmira's second consecutive Empire 8 Tournament appearance.

E8 Player of the Week
Kayla Fitzgerald '15 went a combined 4-0 last week in singles and doubles, helping EC to a pair of wins over Houghton College and Hartwick College. She also moved to second place in Elmira College history in career wins, which when combined with her flawless record, earned Fitzgerald Empire 8 Player of the Week honors.

Series History
EC and Alfred have met 18 times since the 2000 season, including four times in the Empire 8 Tournament, with the Saxons holding an 11-7 advantage in the series. The Soaring Eagles, however, have won the last three matchups between the teams, most recently posting a 9-0 victory in 2013.

A Look at Alfred
The Saxons of Alfred University come into Tuesday's match with a 3-4 overall record, with all three wins coming in Empire 8 play. Alfred holds a 3-2 record in conference matches, defeating Houghton College, Hartwick Colllege, and most recently, Nazareth College. The win over Nazareth snapped a six-match losing streak to the Golden Flyers.

One for the Dramatics
Alfred's win over Nazareth was a back and forth affair as matches continued to finish up. The Saxons held a 2-1 lead after doubles, but fell behind 4-3 following the completion of the first four singles matches. Alfred got a huge straight set win from Rachel Cook at second singles, 7-6(9), 6-1, and Emma Jackson rallied to clinch the Saxon victory with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at third singles.

Looking Ahead
EC will take a short break from team competition to participate in the 2014 USTA-ITA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by William Smith College in Geneva, NY from September 27-29. Players from across the Northeast will compete for individual accolades in both singles and doubles throughout the course of the weekend.
