Waters Ties Program Record for Career Doubles Wins as Elmira Powers Past Utica

BOX SCORE

Utica, NY --
The Elmira College men's tennis team (7-5, 4-3 Empire 8) continued their pursuit of qualifying for this year's Empire 8 Conference Tournament with an all-important 9-0 conference victory over Utica College (1-10, 0-7 Empire 8).  Elmira's win sets up a showdown tomorrow between the Soaring Eagles and Nazareth College, a match that if won by the Purple and Gold would send EC to the Empire 8 Conference Tournament for the first time since 2007 and the first time since the tournament field was narrowed from eight to four teams.

Third-year talent and Elmira, NY native, Satchal Waters '16 was one of six double-winners for the Soaring Eagles today.  Waters tallied both a singles and doubles win, both of which moved the junior netter up in the Elmira College record books.

With two wins today, Waters increased his career total wins to 47, putting him in sole possession of second place as he passes former teammate, Sam Pine '14, who ended his EC career with 46.  His 47 career wins have come in the form of 22 singles victories and 25 doubles wins.  His 22 triumphs on the singles court puts him in a two-way tie for third place in Elmira history, one shy of second-place Dave Olsson '02, and his 25 doubles wins puts him in a two-way tie for first place with Pine.

Additionally, Elmira saw Keith Bujak '15 and Austin Mansell '16 move up in the EC record books as well.  Bujak and Mansell are sitting on 21 doubles victories, putting them in a five-way tie for third place in Elmira history.  Mansell's singles victory today ups his career total to 22, putting him in a two-way tie with Waters for third place on the EC leaderboard.

Elmira opened today's contest by sweeping the doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead right out of the gate.  For Elmira, today's doubles sweep is the fourth time this season the Soaring Eagles have won all three doubles matches.

In doubles play, Elmira won 24-of-28 games played.  EC's first doubles tandem of Keith Bujak '15 and Satchal Waters '16 cruised to an 8-1 win as the duo improved to 8-8 on the year, including a very impressive 8-4 mark in dual matches.

Elmira's second doubles team of Austin Mansell '16 and Chris Konow '18 improved to 7-3 on the year following an 8-3 win this afternoon.  Patrick Tracey '18 and Yaniv Kogan '18 completed the doubles sweep for Elmira as the fellow classmates blanked their opponents at the third position, 8-0.

In singles action, Elmira built on their momentum from the doubles matches as the Purple and Gold won 72-of-79 games played.  Elmira saw Mansell, Konow, and Tracey tally 6-0, 6-0 wins at third, fourth, and fifth singles, respectively.  For Mansell, his win at the third spot brings his season total singles victories to eight, which are the most singles wins of his three-year EC career.

Bujak picked up a 6-0, 6-2 win at first singles, Waters earned a 6-2, 6-1 win at second, and Kogan tallied a 6-1, 6-1 victory at sixth.

Elmira will be back in action tomorrow when the Soaring Eagles welcome Nazareth College for EC's home and regular season finale.  Match-time is set for 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center in Pine Valley, NY.
