Ithaca, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team's run at the Empire 8 Tournament came to an end this morning as they fell to No. 22, and top-seeded, Stevens Institute of Technology, 6-0.
The Soaring Eagles played tough doubles, with just about every game going to deuce, but the Ducks would be the ones who prevailed and posted convincing 8-0, 8-2, and 8-0 wins at first, second, and third doubles, to take a 3-0 lead.
EC, facing one of the best starting six-man rotations in the country, would have to play their best tennis of the season to mount a comeback. Unfortunately, that would not happen as Stevens proved to be too strong. The Ducks took the fifth singles match to make it 4-0, and then got simultaneous wins at first and fourth singles to bring the match to its 6-0 close.
Elmira, at 8-6, tied the program record for wins in a season and made their first trip to the Empire 8 Tournament since the four-team format was adopted in 2008. The Soaring Eagles will now throw their names in for a bid into next week's ECAC Upstate Tennis Tournament, the first year that the ECAC is offering team competition.
