Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's tennis team will be looking to make it two wins in a row this afternoon, when the Soaring Eagles make the trip out to Amherst, NY to take on NCAA Division II opponent, Daemen College. Match time is set for 4:00 p.m.
Last Time OutElmira enters today's match with a 1-2 record after picking up their first win of the year on Sunday, a dominant 9-0 defeat of visiting D'Youville College. In the match, Elmira won 96-of-97 games en route to their shutout win.
Yoshino Moves UpAyaka Yoshino '16 continues to do what she does – win matches. Against D'Youville, the Yokohama, Japan native tallied her third straight win of the season at first singles and her second win of the year at first doubles. With the wins, Yoshino moved into a three-way tie for first place in EC history for career singles wins (31), second place in total career wins (61), and a two-way tie for second place in career doubles victories (30).
Career FirstsEmily Green '18 and
Caitlin Dwyer '16 both recorded career firsts in Elmira's win over D'Youville. Green teamed up with Dwyer for an 8-0 win at third doubles, their first victory as a doubles tandem and Green's first collegiate win. Green and Dwyer also picked up wins at fifth and sixth singles, both of which are career firsts.
Scouting DaemenThe Wildcats of Daemen College enter tonight's cross-divisional matchup with a 2-1 record after picking up wins Molloy College and Oswego State in the early part of the season. Today's match for the Wildcats is their home opener, which should serve them well, as Daemen went 7-4 at their home courts last season. Karli Hollins is a player to watch for Daemen, as the Orchard Park, NY native has an unblemished 3-0 record at first singles this season.
Looking AheadFollowing today's contest, the Elmira women will be back on the courts this weekend when the Soaring Eagles re-open Empire 8 Conference play. On Saturday, September 19th, EC welcomes St. John Fisher College to the Murray Athletic Center and the following day, September 20th, Elmira will face Utica College at home as well. Both matches are slated for 1:00 p.m.
