Men's Basketball Heads to Oswego For Max Ziel Tournament

ELMIRA, N.Y. --
The Elmira College men's basketball team will look to rebound from its season-opening loss to Hilbert College with a trip to Oswego, New York, to compete in the Max Ziel Tournament, hosted by Oswego State on Friday November 18th, and Saturday, November 19th. The Soaring Eagles kick off the weekend tournament against SUNY Canton on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Weekend Overview
  • Elmira takes on the Roos of SUNY Canton in the first round of the Max Ziel Tournament on Friday at 5:30 p.m.
  • The Soaring Eagles will advance to face the host Lakers or the Privateers of SUNY Maritime in the second round.
  • The consolation game will be played at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, followed by the championship game at 4:00 p.m.

Harkins Heating Up
  • Hayden Harkins proved to be one of the best long-distance shooters in the nation last year, finishing 26th in made 3-pointers per game (3.1) and 33rd in 3-point field goal percentage (42.3).
  • Looking to crack the program's all-time 3-point record book, the junior opened the season 4-for-8 from beyond the arc against Hilbert College.
  • He finished the season opener with a game-high 18 points.
  • His four treys upped his career total to 118, leaving Harkins 10 makes shy of tying David Nelson '10 (128) for 10th-place in program history.

Davis Crashes the Glass
  • Although Hilbert out-rebounded Elmira as a team, 41-to-38, EC senior forward Matt Davis had big day in the post.
  • The 6-foot 7-inch forward led all players with a game-high 10 rebounds. It marks a new single-game career high for the local Horseheads, N.Y., native.
  • He established his new personal record despite playing just 16 minutes off of the bench.

SUNY Canton at a Glance
  • The Kangaroos open the 2016-17 season against Elmira at Oswego State's Max Ziel Tournament.
  • Canton began the 2015-16 season with nine straight victories and finished with a 20-4 overall record.
  • Last year's leading scorers, Sam Annorh and Romario Fletcher, both return after averaging 17.7 and 15.2 points per game, respectively.
  • Canton head coach Ben Thompson enters his first season at the helm after serving as an assistant for NCAA Division II Finalist Lincoln Memorial University last season.

Oswego State at a Glance
  • The Lakers opened the season with a loss to E8 foe Nazareth College, 63-57.
  • Although Oswego made 18-of-58 field goals against Naz, the Lakers made only 3-of-20 shots from 3-point distance.
  • Brian Sortino paced the team with 23 points, while Keith Tyson finished with a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Sortino started all 31 games a year ago and scored a team-high 20.9 points per game en route to D3hoops.com Third-Team All-America honors.
  • He guided the Lakers to their deepest postseason run in program history, as the team lost by one point in the NCAA Round of 16 to Wooster College, 66-65.

SUNY Maritime at a Glance
  • SUNY Maritime, a member of the Skyline Conference, finished the 2015-16 season with an 8-17 record.
  • Patrick MacDonald returns to SUNY Maritime after earning First-Team All-Conference honors last season.
  • MacDonald averaged a double-double with 16.0 points and 10.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore.
  • He led the Privateers to victory in the 2016-17 season opener, 85-83, against Lehman College, with 27 points and 13 rebounds.
