Elmira College (5-5) vs. Keuka College (0-0) | Saturday, March 19, 2016 | 12:00 p.m.
Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome - Pine Valley, NYElmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis will continue its four-match homestand when the Soaring Eagles host the Keuka College Wolfpack in a non-conference bout on Saturday, March 19th, at 12:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome.
Last Time OutThe Soaring Eagles recovered from a 9-0 loss against the Rochester Institute of Technology on March 8th by posting a 9-0 victory over D'Youville College on March 11th. It marked the first time the Purple and Gold have swept all nine matches this spring and the first such win since April 25, 2015, against Utica College. However, EC followed the D'Youville sweep with a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Oswego State the following day. Following doubles play and the first two matches of singles play, the Soaring Eagles held a 4-1 lead over the Lakers, but the Lakers closed singles play with four wins to complete the comeback.
Austin Mansell '16 was Elmira's top performer last weekend, winning all four of his matches at third singles and second doubles.
Eyeing the RecordWith a second singles and first doubles win last week, Elmira senior
Satchal Waters '16 moved within one victory of tying Gabe Cortes '11 (58) for the program's all-time wins record. If Waters can secure wins at both singles and doubles against Keuka College, he will move into sole possession of first place on the all-time list. The Elmira, NY, native is already EC's all-time leader in doubles wins with 29 and enters this weekend third in single wins with 28, one shy of current teammate
Austin Mansell '16.
Tracey Excelling in SinglesPatrick Tracey '18 has performed exceptionally well at fourth flight singles in his second season with the Soaring Eagles. The 6-foot-2 sophomore currently tied for the team lead in singles wins with a 7-3 mark, while his seven wins are nearly double the total he posted in his rookie campaign. Tracey was one of two players to sweep both solo matches last week against D'Youville and Oswego State. A singles victory against Keuka will place Tracey in a five-way tie for seventh all-time in single-season history. He needs only three more singles victories to tie the single-season record, set by Gabe Cortes '11 in the 2008 and 2009 seasons.
Series HistoryThe Soaring Eagles hold a 5-2 record against Keuka since 2000. The last time the two programs met was in 2013, when EC concluded the spring season with a 9-0 drubbing of Keuka on April 30th at the Murray Athletic Center. In that match, Waters and Mansell were two of four Soaring Eagles to post perfect straight-set wins.
Scouting KeukaThe Wolfpack will open their 2016 spring season against the Soaring Eagles this weekend. Keuka hasn't found much success on the court in recent years, as the Wolfpack have only one victory to their name in the previous three seasons. That win came against Bryn Athyn on April 17, 2015, by a score of 5-4. Senior Rich Matrassi is the squad's leading returner, having won three single matches at fifth flight in his junior campaign. Matrassi, however, finished 0-10 in double play. Returning junior Garrett Calton was winless in first and second singles, but posted one victory at first doubles with the now-graduated Zach Allen.
Up NextElmira will conclude its current homestand when it opens play inside the Empire 8 Conference against Utica College on April 2nd, at 1:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome.
