Houghton, NY -- Elmira College men's tennis suffered its third conference loss of the season this evening on the road to Houghton College, 6-3. With the defeat, Elmira falls below .500 on the year, while the Highlanders improve to 7-5 on the 2016 campaign.
Houghton opened the match by winning two of the three doubles points, earning victories at the second and third positions. Elmira's lone doubles win came at the top spot, as seniors
Satchal Waters '16 and
Austin Mansell '16 teamed up for an 8-4 victory. The win for Waters and Mansell is their first as a duo this season.
The Highlanders controlled the action in singles as well, earning wins at spots third through sixth. Similar to doubles, Waters and Mansell were the only two players to walk away with victories.
After dropping the first set 6-2, Waters rallied in impressive form, winning the next two sets by 6-1, 6-1 scores to defeat the reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, Chase Rangel. The win for Waters is his first third-set victory of the season, as well as his first win at the top singles position.
Mansell also had a tough match that he pulled out, although his finished in straight sets. The West Lebanon, NH, native earned a break in each of the sets to pull out a 6-3, 7-5 win at second singles, his first win at the second spot this year. With the win, Mansell moved into a four-way tie for first place in program history for single-season singles victories.
