PINE VALLEY, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team began today's non-conference match against Fredonia looking to extend its eight-match home win streak, a mark that dated back to the 2014-15 season. Elmira's stretch of home wins came to an end today, as the Soaring Eagles suffered a 6-3 setback at the Murray Athletic Center to the Blue Devils.
Elmira's first doubles team of
Tilila El Yazidi '20 and
Megan Fitzgerald '18 continued their assault on the top of the lineup with an 8-0 win this afternoon. El Yazidi and Fitzgerald are flawless this season in doubles action with a perfect 4-0 record.
The win at first doubles was the only point EC would get from today's doubles action, as the Purple and Gold entered the singles portion of the match in a 2-1 hole.
Fredonia added to its lead with wins at third and fourth singles, before El Yazidi and Fitzgerald claimed singles wins to bring the score to 4-3. El Yazidi was a 6-3, 6-1 winner at the top singles spot, her fourth consecutive straight-set win of the year, while Fitzgerald picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win at the second spot. The win for Fitzgerald also increased her consecutive win streak to six matches, a mark that dates back to last season.
Unfortunately for Elmira, the Blue Devils won the final two matches of the day at fifth and sixth singles to walk away with a 6-3 victory.
