ROCHESTER, N.Y. --
The Elmira College women's tennis team eyed its first Empire 8 Conference win of the 2016 season this afternoon, as the Soaring Eagles traveled to face the Cardinals of St. John Fisher College. Despite wins at the top of the lineup, Elmira would fall to its E8 rival by a 6-3 final.

Megan Fitzgerald '18 was a double-winner today, which brought her career win total to 48. Her 48 victories moved the Thomaston, Connecticut, native into a two-way tie with former teammate Amy Schmidt '15 for fifth place in the EC record book.

Fisher jumped out to a 2-0 lead in today's match thanks to a pair of 8-1 wins at second and third doubles. However, Elmira brought the score to within one, as Tilila El Yazidi '20 and Fitzgerald teamed up for an 8-2 victory at number one doubles.

The Cardinals built off of their momentum from doubles play to earn straight-set wins at third, fourth, fifth and sixth singles, dropping just five games in the process.

Action at first and second singles could not have been any different, as El Yazidi and Fitzgerald produced straight-set victories. El Yazidi was a 6-0, 6-0 winner at first singles, her sixth win of the year at the top position. Fitzgerald followed up with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at the second spot, her third consecutive victory, to improve to 7-1 in singles action.
