ELMIRA, N.Y. -- Elmira College women's tennis will be looking to pick up its first conference win of the year this Saturday, October 1st, when the Soaring Eagles travel to face the Saxons of Alfred University at 11:00 a.m.
LAST TIME OUT: Elmira concluded a three-game road trip last Sunday, September 25th, with a non-conference matchup with Oswego State. The Soaring Eagles picked up wins at first and second singles, as well as first doubles, in a 6-3 loss to the Lakers.
Tilila El Yazidi '20 and
Megan Fitzgerald '18 were double-winners for the Elmira women. The duo teamed up for an 8-3 win at the top doubles spot, before El Yazidi claimed a clinical 6-1, 6-0 victory at the top singles spot. Fitzgerald pulled out a tight three-setter at second singles, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 1-0 (10-3).
SINGLE-SEASON RECORDS: El Yazidi and Fitzgerald are on the cusp of cracking the top-10 chart for single-season wins in several categories. Both players have 16 wins on the year (8-2 singles; 8-2 doubles), just one shy of moving into a six-way tie for seventh place. The duo already owns a share of 10th place for single-season singles victories, although three more wins by either player would move them into a tie for the college record. Finally, with one additional doubles victory, El Yazidi and Fitzgerald would slide into a six-way tie for eighth place in EC history.
SCOUTING ALFRED: The Saxons enter Saturday's matchup with a 2-8 overall record and a 1-4 mark inside the Empire 8 Conference. Alfred's two wins on the year came against St. John Fisher, 5-4, and Oswego State, 7-2. Freshman Tori Pellegrino leads the Saxons in singles action this season with a team-leading three wins in 10 matches at the No. 1 position. She is also 4-5 at first doubles with second-year netter Emma Siemer.
SERIES HISTORY: Elmira and Alfred have faced each other 29 times in their respective histories. The Saxons lead the all-time series with a 15-14 record, although, the Soaring Eagles enter Saturday's contests having won the last five meetings.
LOOKING AHEAD: Elmira will take a three-day break before its next match, a Tuesday, October 4th, meeting with E8 foe Nazareth College. Tuesday's bout with the Golden Flyers is set to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center.
