Men’s Basketball Prepares for Home Tilt With Utica

Complete Game Notes

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's basketball team returns home to Speidel Gymnasium for an Empire 8 Conference tilt with Utica College on Saturday, January 14th. The game is scheduled to start 4:00 p.m.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES
  • Although Henry Cuffee '19 did not start on Saturday vs. Stevens, the second-year forward still managed to register a double-double.
  • Cuffee scored 12 points and hauled in 11 rebounds for the third double-double of his sophomore season.
  • Cuffee has finished with a double-double in three of his four games with double-digit points this year.
  • His three double-doubles are the most by a Soaring Eagle since the 2012-13 season. That year, 6-foot-6-inch center Chris Cassidy '14 posted six during his junior campaign.
  • Including the double-double registered by Anthony Abate '19 on November 26th vs. Vassar, the 2016-17 EC team has four on the season. That's also the most since the 2012-13 squad, which had eight total.

HARKINS LEADS THE PACK
  • Hayden Harkins '18 opened the Empire 8 Conference portion of the schedule with five 3-pointers against Hartwick and four more against Stevens.
  • According to the NCAA Rankings Summary, Harkins sits atop the conference leaderboards in both made 3-point field goals with 39 and 3-point field goal percentage at 41.9 percent (39-for-93).
  • Additionally, Harkins is tied with Patrick Barron of Stevens Institute of Technology for the league lead in treys per game with 3.5.
  • EC's 6-foot-5-inch sharpshooter continues to march his way up the program's all-time leaderboard, and with 153 career treys, he needs just three more 3-pointers to tie Reggie Rollins '88 and Shawn Blakeslee '00 for fifth-place all-time (156).
  • If Harkins reaches the 156 career 3-point field goal mark at home against Utica, he will become the third player under the tutelage of Head Coach Randie Torgalski to crack Elmira's Top-5 list.

UTICA AT A GLANCE
  • The Pioneers have struggled to start the season, with an overall record of 2-10.
  • These early struggles have not deterred the Pioneers, as they enter Saturday's matchup fresh off of two-straight conference victories over Hartwick College and Alfred University in the last two-and-a-half weeks.
  • Utica has scored 10.1 more points per game in its current win streak than in its previous 10 contests.
  • Junior Ivan Iton has been the main catalyst for Utica's recent success, as he has averaged 19.0 points, 15.0 boards and 3.5 blocks during the Pioneers' win streak.
  • The 6-foot-4-inch forward leads the team with 15.9 points and ranks second in the conference with his team-leading 9.3 rebounds per game.
  • Another contributor to the Pioneer's improved play is the emergence of of freshman guard Hunter Remley.
  • In Utica's two most recent games, he averaged a team-leading 22.0 points and knocked down seven 3-pointers in the process.
  • Remley leads the Pioneers and paces the E8 among freshmen with a 42.4 3-point field-goal percentage.
