Men's Basketball Challenges Nazareth for Second-Straight Conference Victory

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's basketball team has a 8:00 p.m. showdown with Empire 8 Conference rival Nazareth College on Tuesday, January 24th, at Speidel Gymnasium. The Soaring Eagles look to win its second consecutive conference matchup. 

HERE COMES ANOTHER SHARPSHOOTER
  • Elmira freshman Alex Ischiropoulos '20 has started to show his shooting prowess in Elmira's last three outings.
  • In the past week, the Media, Pennsylvania, product paced the team in points with 13.7 points per contest.
  • Ischiropoulos has done most of his damage from behind the 3-point arc, as he hit 11-of-21 (52.4) attempts from distance.
  • In that stretch, he has made five more treys than the next Soaring Eagle.
  • For the season, the rookie guard's 40.3 3-point shooting percentage sits second, behind Hayden Harkins '18
  • (41.9), on Elmira's team leaders in that category.
  • Ischiropoulos was especially important in EC's win over Ithaca on Saturday, as he poured in a game-high 17 points on 6-of-13 shooting.

PORRETT CONTINUES TO LEAD
  • Justin Porrett '19 has done a little bit of everything for Elmira this season.
  • The sophomore guard leads the team in assists per game (4.6) and steals (1.1), sits second in points (10.3) and ranks third in rebounds (4.1).
  • Porrett's assists average puts the second-year Soaring Eagle in second place in the Empire 8 Conference.
  • His improved play has allowed Head Coach Randie Torgalski to entrust the Dumont, New Jersey, native with the most average minutes on the team.
  • Porrett's 32.5 minutes per game ranks fifth in the conference and he is the lone Soaring Eagle to average over 30.0 minutes per game.
  • In the last three games, he averaged a team-leading 7.1 rebounds and the second-most points with 11.3.
  • Porrett made a major impact in Elmira's win over the Bombers, as he chipped in four points, eight rebounds and eight assists, the latter tying a career-high mark.

NAZARETH AT A GLANCE
  • The Golden Flyers make the trip to Elmira with a 9-6 overall record and a 3-3 mark inside Empire 8 play.
  • In its most recent game on Saturday, Naz defeated Hartwick College at home by a final score of 74-65.
  • The Golden Flyers own a conference-leading assists-to-turnover ratio of 1.38 and their 14.9 helpers per game rank second in the E8.
  • The Nazareth defense matches up well to the Soaring Eagle offense, as it owns a conference-leading 26.7 defensive 3-point field goal percentage in the conference.
  • Leading the way for the Naz offense are guards Tyler Stenglein and Brendan Wind.
  • Stenglein paces the Empire 8 scoring 21.4 points per game, good for 30th in country.
  • Wind has been just as impressive, as his 6.9 assists per game leads the E8 and ranks eighth nationally.
  • Stenglein has done a great job of taking care of the ball, as his 2.3 assist-to-turnover ratio paces the conference.
