Softball Challenges Medaille to Non-Conference Doubleheader on Wednesday

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College softball team welcomes Medaille College to Eldridge Park Stadium for a doubleheader. The opening game non-conference twin bill is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT: Elmira split a home twin bill against non-conference foe SUNY Canton on Monday at Eldridge Park Stadium. The EC batters were seeing the ball well at the start of the opening tilt, as an Emily Carlin '17 ground out and a two-run double from Carolyn Corcoran '19 gave the Purple and Gold to an early 3-0 advantage in the first. Chelsea Storch '17 tacked on another run in the second to give the Soaring Eagles a 4-1 lead. The Roos did not stay down for long, however, as they plated one in the second, one in the third and three in the fifth to storm ahead, 5-4. Facing their first deficit of the contest, the Purple and Gold quickly answered with a high-scoring fifth inning. In the bottom of the frame, a Carlin double, an Emily Clark '19 stand-up triple and a Rachel Katzenberger '19 single drove home three runs, which gave EC a 7-5 lead. Clark added one more run in the sixth to seal the 8-5 victory. The nightcap, on the other hand, started off slowly for Elmira, as it found itself down 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth frame. Katzenberger and Storch RBI singles in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, evened the score at 2-all to force extra innings. In the eighth frame, Canton scored thrice to take a 5-2 lead. The Purple and Gold were unable to answer despite having the bases loaded, as Storch lined into a double play to the pitcher to end the game.

EMILY'S ENERGY: In her second collegiate season, Clark is developing into one of the most well-rounded hitters in the E8. The Trumbull, Connecticut, product went 4-for-6 on Monday, raising her batting average to .375. The 5-foot-11-inch first baseman has also shown some power at the plate, as she has hit a double, triple and home run already this season which has raised her slugging percentage to .750, the fifth-highest average in the conference.

SCOUTING MEDAILLE: The Mavericks enter today's tilt riding a four-game win streak over two Alleghaney Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) opponents. Following this recent run of success, Medaille's overall record sits at 13-7. The Mavericks' starting pitching has fueled their recent win streak, as it held its opponents to two runs or less in all four victories. Freshman pitcher Laura Kratzke paces the Medaille rotation with a team-low 1.54 ERA and owns a noteworthy 7-4 record. Freshman Brook Peters has helped carry some of the pitching load for the Mavericks with an unblemished 2-0 record, while maintaining a 3.80 ERA. Medaille's offense has been impressive as well, as it leads the AMCC with a 7.5 runs per game average. Junior outfielder Sharon Trigilio has been a terror for opposing pitchers at the top of the lineup, with a team-leading .493 batting average. Once she reaches base, the East Amherst, New York, native continues to instill fear, as she leads the conference with 14 stolen bags. Trigilio can drive the ball as well, as she paces the team in slugging percentage (.606) thanks to six doubles and one triple.

SERIES HISTORY: The Soaring Eagles and the Mavericks have met once prior to today's affair, with EC coming out on top by a final score of 7-3 in Schenectady, New York, on May 15, 2010.

LOOKING AHEAD: Elmira returns to action on Friday, April 7, with a home E8 doubleheader versus Houghton College. The conference twin bill is slated to begin at 3:00 at Eldridge Park Stadium.
