Women’s Lacrosse Eyes Second Straight Win against Wells

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- After picking up its first win of the season last time out, the Elmira College women's lacrosse team will look to make it two in a row, as the Soaring Eagles travel this evening to face the Express of Wells College. The non-conference bout is scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. in Aurora, New York.

LAST TIME OUT: The Soaring Eagles tasted victory for the first time on Sunday, April 2, with a nail-biting 10-9 win against visiting New England College. Elmira opened the game with back-to-back goals from Kyra McDonald '18 and Kylie Connell '17 in the opening four minutes, but the Pilgrims went on a 5-0 run over the next seven-plus minutes to take a 5-2 lead. However, the Purple and Gold pieced together a 6-1 run that bridged the first and second halves to go up 8-6 with 21:35 remaining in regulation play. Two consecutive goals by New England's Allison Granata leveled the game at 8-8, the two squads traded tallies to bring the contest to 9-9. Thankfully, EC's Rachel Grampp '18 provided the game-winning score at 3:47 to secure a one-goal victory for the Soaring Eagles.

CAREER DAY: Charlotte, North Carolina, native Kyra McDonald had a day to remember last time out, as the junior attacker registered career highs in points (5) and goals (4). Her five points and four tallies are the most by a Soaring Eagle this season. McDonald scored three of her four goals in the first half, including a score on a beautifully-crafted scoop shot in the closing seconds of the first half, which was part of a 4-1 Soaring Eagle run to end the first half.

SCOUTING WELLS: The Express head into today's contest with a 1-4 overall record and have lost two straight to SUNY Poly and SUNY Canton. Wells' only win of the year came on March 25, when the Express walloped D'Youville College on the road by a 22-6 final score, the most goals scored by Wells this season. Mackenzie Maloney has had anything but a sophomore slump in 2017, as the Huntington Station, New York, native leads the Express in points (26) and goals (22). Maloney is the only player on the Express with double-digit goals and is tied for fifth in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC). Defensively, Anna Bozeat has been Wells' go-to option between the pipes and has played every minute in net this season. She sports a .350 save percentage and a 13.00 goals-against average.

SERIES HISTORY: Elmira and Wells will meet for the eighth time this afternoon. The Purple and Gold have dominated the all-time series with an unblemished 7-0 record. EC picked up a 21-11 victory over the Express last season on the turf field at Corning Community College.

LOOKING AHEAD: Elmira resumes its Empire 8 Conference schedule this weekend, when the Purple and Gold travel to face the Hawks of Hartwick College on Saturday, April 8, at 1:00 p.m.
