PINE VALLEY, N.Y. --
The Elmira College women's tennis team was one point away from clinching its second win of the season, but the visiting Lakers of Oswego State made a ferocious comeback late in the match to secure a 5-4 victory over the Soaring Eagles.

Elmira got off to a hot start in today's contest by winning two of the three doubles matches. EC's top tandem of Megan Fitzgerald '18 and Katy Jewett '21 surrendered just two games en route to a dominant 8-2 victory, the duo's third win of the season. Rookies Eliza Johnson '21 and Cassie Brown '21 earned an early break of serve in their match at the No. 3 position and never relinquished the break, as the freshmen won 8-6.

Emily Green '18 and Sarah Hill '19 fell behind early, 6-1, in their match at the second doubles spot. The two upperclassmen clawed their way back into the match by winning four straight games, much of which could be credited to EC's consistent play from the baseline and at net. Unfortunately the duo was unable to complete the comeback, as Oswego won the next two games to clinch an all-important 8-5 victory.

Elmira picked up a pair of wins in singles action, as seniors Fitzgerald and Green claimed straight-set wins at the first and third positions, respectively. Fitzgerald was a 6-0, 6-2 winner, while Green prevailed by scores of 6-1, 6-4. With the wins, Fitzgerald remained unbeaten on the year (4-0), while Green leveled her record this season (2-2).

Singles contests at second, fourth and fifth all ended in straight sets in favor of the visitors, leaving all eyes on court four as Brown looked to clinch the win for the Soaring Eagles. The Union Springs, New York, native rolled in the opening set, 6-2, before finding herself in a second-set tiebreaker. Brown's counterpart from Oswego, Erin Vargo, won the breaker by the smallest of margins, 8-6. Vargo would go on to claim a close third set and the match, 2-6, 7-6 (6), 6-3, which clinched a 5-4 win for the Lakers.
