ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's tennis team concludes the 2017-18 season with a 4:00 p.m. non-conference bout against SUNY Oneonta on Tuesday, March 27, at the Murray Athletic Center.
LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles dropped a hard-fought 5-4 decision to non-league foe the College at Brockport in EC's first match of the spring season on Saturday, March 24, at the MAC. Elmira started off the match strong by winning both first and second doubles. The team's No. 1 pair of
Megan Fitzgerald '18 and
Katy Jewett '21 cruised to an 8-2 win, while
Sarah Hill '19 and
Danielle Bliss '19 teamed up for the first time this year and took second doubles, 8-4. Following singles wins by Fitzgerald and Hill, Elmira looked poised to take the non-conference match. The Golden Eagles had other plans, however, as they ended the bout with four straight singles victories to seal a 5-4 comeback.
HISTORY IN THE MAKING
With two more victories in Saturday's 5-4 loss to Brockport, Fitzgerald continued to add to her already impressive resume. In addition to widening her advantage as the program leader in career total (81), doubles (41) and singles wins (40), the Thomaston, Connecticut, native also crack some of EC's single-season victory leaderboards. Fitzgerald tied herself in eight-place in single-season program history with 18 total triumphs in 2017-18, in addition to ranking sixth in singles and 10th single-season doubles wins with nine. With two more victories against the Red Dragons, the senior will match Ayaka Yoshino '16 as the only two Soaring Eagles to tally multiple seasons with 20-plus wins.
SERIES HISTORY
Today's match marks the 13th all-time meeting between Elmira and SUNY Oneonta. The Red Dragons own a 12-1 lead in the series after winning every tilt since the 2003 campaign. It was in that season that the Soaring Eagles picked up a 5-4 triumph over their aerial foes October 8.
SCOUTING ONEONTA
The Red Dragons fly into Tuesday's bout with an 11-3 overall record in 2017-18 after falling to Trine University by a 5-4 final score on March 7. Prior to the start of the spring season, Oneonta's most recent match was a loss to SUNY Geneseo, 5-2, in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Tournament semifinals. Junior Alyssa Brault leads the way for the Red Dragons, as she has won a team-best 21 total matches this season playing first singles and doubles. Her lone singles loss came on October 6, 2017, when she fell to Brittany Grandville, a First-Team All-SUNYAC selection from SUNY New Paltz. Brault's doubles partner, Julieta Eulau, is also having outstanding year, as she has recorded 20 total victories in her debut season. The Oceanside, New York, native has tallied eight singles victories, all in the No. 2 slot, in addition to winning 12 times alongside Brault at first doubles.
