ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College baseball team continues Empire 8 Conference play with a midweek road bout against the Stevens Institute of Technology on Wednesday, March 28, in Hoboken, New Jersey. The opening is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. at Dobbelaar Field.

LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles fell to St. John Fisher College by a 14-5 final score in the final game of the season series on Monday, March 26, at historic Dunn Field. The high-powered Cardinals were methodical in gathering their lead, as they spread their 14 runs across scoring six innings. Junior Andy Reed '19 started on the mound for the Soaring Eagles and went 5.0 innings, allowing seven runs, four of which were earned, while striking out three batters. At the plate, Dennis Rudolph '18 led the Soaring Eagles with a pair of hits and a stolen base. Both Jansen Crossley '20 and Jack Volpe '20 entered in relief and went 1-for-2 with an RBI. Nick Sampogna '18 started as EC's designated hitter and rocketed a double and scored a run in the contest.

RUDOLPH GUIDES THE LINEUP
With two more hits against Fisher, Rudolph continued his hot streak at the plate to start the season. The senior from Glen Ellyn, Illinois, hat posted a hit in each of the last seven games, his third such streak of at least seven games and his longest since he hit in nine straight in the first month of the 2016 campaign. In addition to his lengthy hitting streak, Rudolph has reached base safely in all 12 games as a senior. The center fielder leads the Purple and Gold and ranks seventh in the Empire 8 with a .381 batting average (16-of-42), in addition to being tied for sixth in the league in stolen bases (5).

SCOUTING STEVENS
The Ducks fly into Wednesday's bout with a 9-9 overall record and a 2-1 mark in the E8 to start the 2018 campaign. Stevens has played great of late, winning four of its last five games, the lone exception being a 4-3 setback to the defending Empire 8 champion, Ithaca College, on Sunday, March 25, in Ithaca, New York. The Ducks rebounded by winning the next two games against the Bombers by 7-2 and 8-4 final scores, respectively. The strength of Stevens this season has been on the pitching mound, as it ranks first in the E8 and 20th in the country in strikeouts per game (10.0) and second in the conference in earned-run average (3.78). Junior hurler Danny Poidomani paces this group of strong pitchers with a team-best 1.88 ERA and 44 strikeouts in a team-high 38.1 innings pitched. Offensively, senior first baseman Alex Detweiler leads the way with a .329 batting average (23-of-70) and 15 RBIs. Junior infielder Matthew Pasko has also been valuable, as he owns a .318 batting average (21-of-66) and has scored a team-leading 14 runs.

SERIES HISTORY
Wednesday's contest will mark the 10th all-time meeting between the Soaring Eagles and Ducks. Despite winning two of the last three games against Stevens, EC trails in the all-time series by a 7-2 margin. However, with 7-1 and 7-5 victories in last season's series, it seems Elmira has started to turn the tide on its feathered foe.

LOOKING AHEAD
The Elmira men continue conference action on Friday, March 30, with a road tilt against Utica College. The first of three weekend bouts will take place on Friday at 3:00 p.m.
