ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's tennis is set for weekend matches against the Pennsylvania College of Technology and Utica College this weekend. The Soaring Eagles will battle the Wildcats first at 4:00 p.m. on Friday in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, before returning home on Saturday to challenge the Pioneers at the Murray Athletic Center at 1:00 p.m.
Â
LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles dropped a non-conference bout to Oswego State, 7-2, on Saturday, March 3, at the Murray Athletic Center. Elmira played strong at both No. 1 singles and doubles, as
Patrick Tracey '18 was a double-winner atop EC's lineup. Tracey and
Stephen Gervase '20 paired up at first singles and cruised to a comfortable 8-1 victory, the team's first win of the season. Tracey followed up double's action with a 6-3, 6-1 triumph over the Lakers' Nick Retzkin at No. 1 singles. Unfortunately for Elmira, these two wins stood as the only two for the team in the match. Gervase had a tightly-contested bout at third singles, but ultimately fell, 6-4, 7-5, after allowing a pair of late service breaks.
Â
SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles and Wildcats met for the first time last season, with Elmira picking up a 9-0 victory at home at the Murray Athletic Center on March 17. Today's contest stands EC's first trip to Williamsport.
Â
SCOUTING PENN COLLEGE
The Wildcats are 1-5 to start the 2017-18 campaign and are riding a four-match losing streak into Friday's contest. However, Penn College came perilously close to ending that skid in its most recent bout, as it fell by a 5-4 final score to Lycoming College to conclude its fall slate of matches on October 3. The team's lone victory was a 9-0 sweep of Misericordia University on September 11. Will Demarco and Andrew Francisco come into the weekend tied for the team lead with two singles victories this season.Â
Â
SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles and Pioneers will meet for the 30th time today. In the previous encounters, Elmira has gotten the better of its long-time foe 23 times, while Utica has tasted victory six times. Last season, the Purple and Gold cruised to a 9-0 victory on April 17, 2017, in Utica, New York.Â
Â
SCOUTING UTICA
The Pioneers enter today's bout as one of two teams in the Empire 8 Conference to not play a match yet, which also includes Hartwick College. Utica comes off its second consecutive season with just one win, as it posted a 1-10 overall record in 2017. The lone victory came against The Sage Colleges by an 8-1 final score in the team's season-opener. Paul Litvak and Patrick Restuccio return to the team as match winners last season. Litvak, a junior from Brooklyn, New York, won twice in 2017, once at third singles and once at first doubles. Restuccio, a senior netter from Clermont, Florida, earned a third doubles victory in the aforementioned opener against the Gators.
Â
UP NEXT
The Elmira men will meet Sage for the first time in program history on Saturday, April 7, with a 1:00 p.m. road bout in Latham, New York. The contest is scheduled to take place indoors at the Tri-City Tennis Facility.
