ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's lacrosse team hosts SUNY Cobleskill for its 2018 home-opener on Saturday, March 10, at nearby Notre Dame High School. The non-conference bout is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.

LAST TIME OUT
Elmira was defeated in its season-opening contest on the road against Keuka College by an 18-2 final score on Saturday, March 3. The first half was much more competitive than the final score would indicate. The Soaring Eagles netted man-up goals to end the first quarter and in the opening minutes of the second quarter, which trimmed Keuka's lead down to 5-2. Jacob Magnoli '18 scored EC's first goal with an assist from Mike Chaderjian '19, and Nevin Olney '18 tallied the second power-play score. However, the Wolves ended the first half by scoring four unanswered goals to take a 9-2 lead into the intermission, before blowing the game open with eight goals in the third quarter. Defenseman Cam Brickey '19 scooped up a team-high five ground balls and caused four turnovers. First-year goalie Richie Cameron '21 made a game-high eight saves in 30 minutes of relief.

OLNEY'S OFFENSE
Fourth-year attacker Nevin Olney '18 entered the 2018 campaign coming off of a banner junior season a year ago. In 2017, the Rochester, New York, native paced Elmira with 22 points and was tied for the team lead with 21 goals. He ended the year strong with goals in back-to-back games against Ithaca College and Utica College, and extended that scoring streak with a man-up tally in the 2018 season opener. Olney's active scoring streak tied the longest from his junior season, but he set a career high by scoring in six consecutive outings as a sophomore.

GOALIE DEBUTS
The battle for Elmira's starting goalie position was one of the most contentious during the 2018 preseason with four different players competing for the job. Earning the first starting nod of the year was rookie Jacob Mattice '21, who played all 30 minutes in the first half and made a trio of saves against Keuka. In the second half, freshman Richie Cameron '21 played the remaining 30 minutes and posted a game-high eight saves.

SERIES HISTORY
The Soaring Eagles will face the Fighting Tigers for the second time in the past three seasons on Saturday afternoon. On March 26, 2016, EC won the previous meeting between the two sides by a convincing 10-3 final score at nearby Notre Dame High School.

SCOUTING SUNY COBLESKILL
The Fighting Tigers have played twice so far in 2018, and both games have been decided by one goal. The season began with a last minute 9-8 loss to Purchase College in the opener on February 27, while the Tigers clawed their way back in the fourth quarter to beat Keystone College in overtime, 12-11, on Thursday night. Senior Jeremy Mowrey scored the tying goal for Cobleskill with just 39 seconds left in regulation and secured the win against the Giants 47 seconds into overtime. Mowrey and juniors Sean Degnan and Garrett Vigrass all returned after leading the Tiger offense in scoring in 2017. Through two games, Degnan (6g-2) and Vigrass (5g-2a) pace the team in points and goals, respectively.

UP NEXT
The Soaring Eagles will travel to Oneonta, New York, to face the Red Dragons of SUNY Oneonta on Saturday, March 17, at 3:30 p.m.
