ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team has a busy weekend ahead of itself, as it will challenge Keuka College and Oswego State on back-to-back days on Saturday and Sunday, March 10-11. The Soaring Eagles begin play on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. road bout against the Wolves, before hosting the Lakers for a 2:00 p.m. bout the following day at nearby Ernie Davis Academy.
LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles kicked off the 2018 season with a 22-11 setback to non-conference foe SUNY New Paltz on Saturday, March 3, at the Greater Binghamton Sports Complex. The Hawks jumped ahead early by taking a 9-1 lead after the first 11:30 of the contest. EC settled in at that point and cut the margin to just six, 11-5, heading into the halftime break. Unfortunately for Elmira, New Paltz scored four of the first five goals in the second half to put the contest out of reach.
Hayley Baker '19 paced the Soaring Eagles with six points (4g-2a), which were just one shy of her career-high point total.
Danielle Goddard '20 and
Kyra McDonald '18 finished next for Elmira with three points on two goals and one assist apiece. Saturday's contest stood as a breakout for Goddard, who logged the first three points of her collegiate career in her first start for the Soaring Eagles.
Kacie Pierce '21 made her collegiate debut in the bout and made nine saves with a .409 save percentage.
DISRUPTIVE DEFENSE
During the 2017 season, the Soaring Eagles ranked second in the Empire 8 Conference in caused turnovers per game with 10.00, just fractions behind league-leading Ithaca College (10.68). With 36 and 30 caused turnovers, respectively,
Sarah Hughson '18 and
Kelcey Crawford '18 both earned a spot on EC's top-10 single-season leaderboard. With an average of 2.75 forced turnovers per game, Hughson was ranked 24th in the nation. In the season opener against the Hawks, the Soaring Eagles caused seven turnovers.
Macy Huntley '19 led the Purple and Gold with two forced turnovers, one of which led directly to a goal.
SCOUTING KEUKA
The Wolves kicked off the 2018 campaign on Thursday with an 18-8 victory over Houghton College in a snow-shortened contest at the Highlanders' Burke Field. Keuka was led in the contest by junior Kendall Neuberger, who led all players with six points and five goals. The Wolves also received a boost from junior Elizabeth Sherman, as the reigning North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) First Team won 14 of the team's 15 draw controls in the contest. Junior goaltender and fellow NEAC All-Conference First-Team selection, Ally Thayer, was in command of the defense. Thayer made five saves in 45:51 minutes of action.
SCOUTING OSWEGO STATE
The Lakers sail into Sunday's contest with a 2-1 overall record to start the young season. The lone blemish on Oswego State's record came in its most recent bout on Wednesday, when Clarkson University handed the Lakers a 10-9 defeat. A key to Oswego State's success this season has been its stellar passing, as the Lakers are second in the State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) in assists per game (7.33). At the forefront of this ball movement is junior Teresa Shattuck, who ranks second in the country with 4.33 helpers per game. In goal, senior Angela Ponto started all three games this season and has posted 26 saves with a .473 save percentage.
LOOKING AHEAD
Elmira continues its season-long three-game homestand on Wednesday, March 14, with a non-conference bout against Buffalo State. The Soaring Eagles and Bengals will square off at 4:00 p.m. at the Corning Community College in Corning, New York.
