ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College men's tennis team concludes the 2018 campaign with a home bout against St. John Fisher College on Saturday, April 28, at 12:30 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center. The bout will be EC's Class of 2018 Recognition Day, which means the Soaring Eagles will honor both
Patrick Tracey '18 and
Yaniv Kogan '18 as the two graduating members of the team.
LAST TIME OUT
The Soaring Eagles fell in Empire 8 Conference action to Houghton College by a 9-0 final score on Tuesday, April 24, in Houghton, New York. The Highlanders, who are second in the E8 with a 5-1 record, dropped a combined 11 points in the match.
ONE AWAY
With just one match left in his collegiate career, Tracey is just one victory shy of becoming Elmira's all-time singles wins leader, as he is tied with Gabe Cortes '11 for first with 37. One more win will also tie Tracey for eighth in single-season program history.
SCOUTING ST. JOHN FISHER
After beginning the season with eight consecutive losses, the Cardinals have had quite the turnaround in the second half of the season, as they have gone 6-1 in their last seven contests. This turnaround coincided with the start of its E8 schedule, as Fisher is 5-2 in league play this season. The Cardinals most recently earned 9-0 sweeps over both Nazareth College and Alfred University. The duo of Kevin Kulawiec and Dustin McCullough have been SJFC's two most effective players this season, as they are both tied for the team lead with 16 wins. Kulawiec, a senior from Fairport, New York, has gone 8-6 on the year at No. 1 singles, which includes a 4-2 mark in the E8. A native of nearby, Big Flats, New York, McCullough has picked up six of his eight singles wins at the No. 3 spot. The duo has combined to go 8-4 as Fisher's top doubles tandem, having lost just one league match in six attempts.
SERIES HISTORY
Saturday's tilt marks the 33rd all-time meeting between these two feathered foes. The Cardinals have gotten the best of the Soaring Eagles in the all-time series, as they own a 27-5 lead over their long-time rivals. Elmira's last victory over Fisher dates back to the 2000 campaign, when EC came out on top by a 5-2 final score in the E8 Championships on April 15, 2000.
