SEASON RECAP: Esports Highlights Fall 2022 Season with ECAC Call of Duty Championship

ELMIRA, N.Y. – With the Fall of 2022 Elmira College Esports season coming to a close, it could very well be labeled as the most exciting, and most successful season in program history. Rostering 30 student-athletes, the Soaring Eagles proved to show continued growth within the Esports program with its biggest roster size in program history.

Additionally, the program also expanded to competing in 11 different game titles, topped off with the first iteration of multiple competitive titles which included the sport titles of Madden, Fifa, and NBA2K, along with Call of Duty, and Halo. The Purple & Gold wrapped up its fall season by securing its first championship and championship runner-up accolades in program history, including its ECAC Call of Duty championship.

Soaring Eagles Call of Duty (7-1*- ECAC Championship)
The very first Soaring Eagles Call of Duty season started on unsure footing with a brand new squad playing together for the first time. Once the roster settled in, there was no looking back. Starting the season off with a loss, the Soaring Eagles proceeded to go on a nine-game win streak, securing the first overall regular season ranking and a first round bye in the playoffs. Defeating each team in their conference - which included avenging their week one loss in the semi-finals, the ECAC Call of Duty championship title would come to Elmira for the teams' first conference championship in program history. The team consisted of Colin Conklin '23, Andrew Warner '24, Joel Pavey '25, and Cole Tucker '25.

Soaring Eagles Madden (* denotes playoff record)
Colin Whitt '25 (3-5)
Connor Olcott '26 (3-5)
Owen Evans '26 (2-6)
Carter Seeberger '26 (2-6)

Competing in the first ever season, Madden got off to a quick start and it looked as though the EC Madden teams would make some serious waves within the conference in their first competitive season. With the new season set to begin on January 30, Madden team members have much to be excited about with hopes to be serious contenders come postseason.

Soaring Eagles NBA2K23 (* denotes playoff record)
Owen Evans '26 (4-4*)
Colin Whitt '26 (4-4*)
Conner Olcott '26 (4-4*)
Carter Seeberger '26 (3-5)
Nicholas Lopez '26 (1-6)

For their first time competing in the NBA2k23 title, the Elmira College Esports team was able to send three of its five NBA2K23 teams to the playoffs, capping off a great first season showing. Evans was able to make it past the first round of playoffs for the Purple & Gold, which will give the Soaring Eagles some momentum going into next season.

Soaring Eagles FIFA (* denotes playoff record)
Matthew Rojas '23 (6-1* - ECAC Championship Runner-up)
Joel Pavey '25 (4-3*)
Kylie Rosen '23 (2-5)

Another title in its inaugural season, Soaring Eagles Fifa wasted no time showing their competitiveness, with every team showing that they have what it takes to run with any other school in the ECAC. Rojas paced the Soaring Eagles behind the monitor, losing just once throughout the entire season en route to an ECAC Championship berth. Though coming up just short, Rojas fought the whole way, securing the 2nd out of 79 overall ECAC Fifa rank, and the championship runner-up trophy for the first in EC Esports program history.

Soaring Eagles Halo (0-7 record)
Another new title for EC Esports, Halo was a bumpy ride but no less fun than any other title the program competed in last season. Team members did a wonderful job of communicating and working together while keeping things light and fun throughout the fall.

Soaring Eagles Overwatch (2-4 record)
For a team with a lot of new and moving parts, there is no lack of talent throughout this roster. With some time spent together learning teammates' tendencies and skills while continuing to work on coming together strategically, the coaching staff is confident that Soaring Eagles Overwatch will be a force in the coming seasons.

Soaring Eagles Rocket League (2-5 record)
Making its comeback after a one season hiatus, Rocket League remains a work in progress but improvement was obvious towards the end of the season.

Soaring Eagles Super Smash Bros. (Gold - 3-5 record; Purple - 1-7 record)
It was known from the start that the fall of '22 season would be a work in progress for the Soaring Eagles Super Smash Bros teams with a new Assistant Coach taking the reins on gameplay facets and strategies. A new voice and style would take some getting used to and may take some time to yield results. Regardless, the teams came together showing incredible resiliency, teamwork, and camaraderie - often getting together for impromptu practices and maintaining scheduled practices as well, with team captains really showing their leadership skills all season long.

Soaring Eagles Valorant (5-3* record)
With four of the five team members returning from previous seasons and an exciting newcomer filling out the starting roster, Soaring Eagles Valorant had high expectations for the Fall '22 season. The teams' overall experience, sound strategy, and communication helped lead them to a 5-3 record and into the playoffs, but exited with a first-round loss.

  • Soaring Eagles Fortnite Purple finishing rank 70th
  • Soaring Eagles Fortnite Gold finishing rank 81st
