ELMIRA, N.Y. – Elmira College Softball head coach
Randie Torgalski has announced the addition of Wendi Hammond as Assistant Coach to his coaching staff ahead of the 2025 season. Hammond joins the Soaring Eagles following a standout pitching career as a five-year member of the softball program at UAlbany.
Hammond, a native of Chemung, New York, played four years of softball at Waverly High School, where she was named a First-Team All-State selection in 2018 and 2019 for the Wolverines. As a senior in 2019, she also helped Waverly claim a Section IV Championship.
A graduate student this past season for the Great Danes, Hammond guided UAlbany to an America East Conference Championship and an appearance in the 2024 NCAA Division I Tournament. Hammond helped the Great Danes secure their automatic bid by hurling a complete-game shutout in a 4-0 victory against UMass Lowell.
Hammond closed her career at UAlbany with several major individual awards. She was named the America East Pitcher of the Year and earned America East All-Championship Tournament Most Outstanding Player honors for the Great Danes. She was also named NFCA Third Team All-Region and became the seventh player in program history named the America East Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
In the record books at UAlbany, Hammond ranks third in career wins (64), games started (94), appearances (122), complete games (60), and innings pitched (634). In her fifth and final season with the Great Danes, she tallied 24 wins through 29 starts with two no-hitters, eight shutouts, and 22 complete games in 190 innings pitched.
As a senior during the 2023 season, Hammond finished in the top 50 of the nation with five shutouts for the Great Danes and led the America East in wins (13), complete games (15), and innings pitched (155). She helped UAlbany advance to its second straight America East Championship game appearance against UMBC as the Great Danes fell in back-to-back championship games against the Retrievers in 2022 and 2023.
Hammond garnered America East All-Championship Tournament honors and was named to the America East Academic Honor Roll following the 2022 campaign for UAlbany. She was named America East Second Team All-Conference and earned a spot on the America East All-Rookie Team following the 2021 season. Hammonds' first season with the Great Danes in 2020 was cut short after four starts in the circle due to the COVID-19 Pandemic that canceled the remainder of UAlbany's season.
Hammond earned her Bachelor's Degree from UAlbany in 2023 after majoring in mathematics with a pre-education track. She completed her Master of Business Administration at UAlbany in May 2024.
