Maddy Johnson '19 was outstanding in the opening weekend of the 2018 campaign, as she tallied nine hits in her 10 at-bats across three games to record a whopping .900 batting average. In addition to getting on base, the Rome, Pennsylvania, native has done a fantastic job of finding her way to home plate, as she scored a team-best five runs.
Following a strikeout in her season-opening at-bat against Hilbert College, Johnson recorded a hit in her next nine plate appearances. She finished that contest 2-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored to help Elmira earn a 5-2 win on Friday afternoon. The speedy outfielder built off that performance in a non-conference doubleheader against Cazenovia College on Sunday afternoon, as she opened the twin bill 3-for-3 with two more runs and the first triple of her career to propel EC to a 14-2 triumph in the team's highest scoring game since 2016. In the nightcap, Johnson was again perfect at the plate with four hits in four tries. It was in that contest that Johnson was able to showcase her speed, as she was successful on two of her three steal attempts.
Johnson and the Soaring Eagles continue non-league play on Tuesday, March 27, when they welcome the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford to Eldridge Park Stadium for a twin bill. The opening contest is slated to start at 1:00 p.m.
