On the turf, James Mayer '20 has seen his role increase dramatically in his second season with the Elmira men's lacrosse team. The junior from Baldwin, New York, played a pivotal role in Wednesday's 6-5 non-conference victory over Keystone College. He recorded career highs in points (3), goals (3), and ground balls (12), and won a season-high-tying six draws at the X.
Mayer netted the first two goals for the Soaring Eagles, including a man-up tally to opening scoring at the 11:45 mark of the first quarter. The 6-foot-2-inch, 205-pound midfielder completed his first career hat trick in impressive fashion, winning a faceoff and taking the ball the distance to extend EC's lead to 4-2 at 11:19 in the second quarter.
On the season, Mayer is second on the team in points (8) and goals (6) and ranks third with 24 ground balls – all of which are single-season career bests through the first seven games of the year.
Mayer and the Soaring Eagles are set to host Hartwick College in Empire 8 action on Wednesday, March 27, at 7:00 p.m. on the turf field at nearby Notre Dame High School.
