Oswego, NY – The Soaring Eagles Women's Tennis team concluded the 2010 fall portion of their schedule by earning a win over the Lakers of SUNY Oswego. Today's win improves EC's record to 2-10 on the 2010 season.
In doubles play Elmira managed to take one of three matches.
Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) and
Alex Putney '12 (Dundee, NY -- Hammondsport) picked up a win at first doubles. The duo never trailed in the match as they would take the match by the score of 8-6. This lone doubles point would be crucial in the outcome of today's match. At second doubles
Rebecca Kingman '11 (Hamilton, NJ -- Steinert) and
Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) teamed up for a 9-7 loss. The doubles tandem would find themselves in a 4-0 hole before clawing their way back to tie it at 4 a piece. Elmira would eventually go into the lead at 7-6 before dropping three games in a row en route to the loss.
Trailing 2-1 in the match, EC knew that a strong singles performance would be necessary for a win.
Palmiero would get things started for Elmira as she would roll to a 6-2, 6-1 win at the third position. She would never trail in either set as she controlled the match from start to finish. With the overall match score at 2-all,
Putney would give EC a 3-2 advantage as she would rally for a 0-6, 6-0, 6-1 victory at first singles. After dropping the first set at love, the third year player would run off 13 straight games. Her aggressive net play was key in today's win.
Kingman would avenge her doubles loss by picking up a 6-0, 6-0 win at the second position. The Jersey native was simply too steady for the rookie she was up against at the two spot. With her win EC would hold a 4-2 lead with three matches still to play.
Elyse Colby '12 (Owego, NY -- Coronado) would fall in a hard fought match at the fifth position by the scores of 6-1, 2-6, 10-6. Due to darkness a super tie-breaker was needed to determine the third set.
At the fourth spot,
Walker would find herself in a battle for the match. She would cruise in the first set, taking it at 6-2. She would fall behind early in the second set 5-0 before running off three games. Her opponent would eventually close the second out at 6-3. With her match on the line as well as EC's hopes of a victory,
Walker would enter a super breaker for the match. In the breaker both players would trade points back in forth as the sun lowered into the night sky. With the score at 7-7
Walker would settle in to take three straight points giving Elmira the victory. As
Walker finished her match, teammate
Micah Moskoff '14 (Somerset, MA -- Somerset) would finish hers as well at the sixth spot. She would drop a tight one 7-5, 6-4.
Today's win concludes the fall portion of EC's schedule. Their spring season schedule has yet to be announced, but keep an eye out as the Soaring Eagles Women's Tennis team will be hungry to build on today's win when the spring season approaches.
