Kingman and Palmiero Win as Fisher Edges Elmira

Rochester, NY – On a cold and windy day in Rochester, NY EC Women's Tennis dropped their third Empire 8 contest to host St. John Fisher College 7-2. Elmira failed to claim any of the doubles points but did show fight in singles action as they took two of six matches.

Captain Rebecca Kingman '11 (Hamilton, NJ -- Steinert) took her singles match in straight sets at the second position. Kingman would jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first before dropping two straight games. The fourth year player would then buckle down to edge out her opponent 6-4 in the tightly contested set. The second set would prove to be much of the same as Kingman would run off four straight games to go up 4-0 in the set. Just like the first set her opponent would fight back to within one game making it 4-3. Kingman would then put the nail in coffin as she would hold serve and break for the win.

Earning Elmira's only other point in the evening was third year standout Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney). The Rochester native took her match in straight set as well, 6-2, 7-6 (7-5). After rolling in the first set, Palmiero found herself in a fight for the second. Each player would exchange games back and forth. Palmiero had several match points at 5-4 but could not convert on any of them. With the tie break underway, Palmiero caught fire taking 6 of the first 8 points. On match point it took Palmiero a nearly 20 ball rally to finally seal her second straight win of the season.

Despite not winning their matches, second year players Clare Lowery '13 (Syracuse, NY -- West Genesee) and Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) showed they have the games to play with anyone in the Empire 8 conference. Lowery took her match to three sets, falling 2-6, 6-1, 6-1 while Walker played two tight sets losing 6-4, 6-2. Look for both these players to improve as the season progresses.

Elmira College Women's Tennis will be back in action on Tuesday, September 14th as they host Alfred University at the Murray Athletics Center in Pine Valley, NY in an Empire 8 match-up.
