Elmira Falls Short in Women’s Tennis

Pine Valley, NY – EC Women's Tennis lost their fourth conference match this evening at the hands of the Saxons of Alfred University. Elmira took one of the three doubles and split the singles matches resulting in a 5-4 score in favor of the Saxons.

Elmira's only doubles point came from third doubles combination Rebecca Kingman '11 (Hamilton, NJ -- Steinert) and Emily Marois '14 (Brooklyn, CT -- Woodstock Academy). The duo trailed most of the match, most notably 6-4 in the match, but would run off four straight games as they would triumph 8-6. Together they are 2-2 on the season.

In singles action EC would take matches at the fourth, fifth, and sixth positions. At the four spot Bri Palmiero '12 (Rochester, NY -- Bishop Kearney) got off to hot start and never looked back as she won her match handily, 6-0, 6-2.

At fifth singles Melanie Walker '13 (Scranton, PA -- Scranton) earned her second Empire 8 victory as she would 6-3, 6-3. The second year player found herself down 3-0 in the first set before going on a 6-game run to take the set. Steady play from the Scranton native was key in today's win.

Earning her first singles win of her collegiate career and Elmira's only double-winner on the day was first year player Marois. Marois got the start today at the sixth spot and was impressive as she cruised to a 6-1, 6-0 win. Her poise and confidence really set her apart today as she played good aggressive tennis.

Elmira will look to bounce back after the tough loss as they host non-conference opponent SUNY Oneonta on Thursday, September 16th at 4:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletics Center in Pine Valley, NY.
