Soaring Eagles Drop Double Header Against Saxons

Elmira, NY -- The Soaring Eagles Softball team hosted the Saxons of Alfred University this afternoon in a pair E8 games.  Game one would require extra innings to decide the outcome but Alfred would prevail 5-4 and would take game two 5-1.

Elmira would get on the scoreboard first as they put up three runs in the second inning.  After loading the bases EC's Alex Andrade '13 (Fairhaven, MA -- Bishop Stang) slapped a pitch up the middle to bring in a run.  Erin Pruess '12 (Glen Falls, NY -- Glen Falls) would work a walk to bring in Elmira's run and shortly after EC would score run three on a passed ball.

The Saxons would respond in the third with a pair of two-out runs.  Maressa Mistretta '13 doubled to left field bringing in one run while Molly Shepherd '12 reached on an infield single, bringing in run two.  Elmira would tack on another run at the bottom of the inning as Andrade worked a walk with the bases loaded to record her second RBI of the afternoon.

After three scoreless innings the Saxons would tie things up at the top of the seventh inning.  The Saxons would put two runners on base to start the inning and would have runners on second and third after a sacrifice bunt.  After scoring a run on a hit to center field, Elmira's Taryn Rumsey '14 (Mansfield, PA -- Mansfield) would steal a three-run homer as she made a leaning catch over the fence for out number two.  Alfred scored on the Rumsey catch to notch things up a four a piece.

In the top of the ninth Alfred would put a runner on as she was hit by the pitch.  After advancing on a sacrifice bunt, Rachel Guszick '14 lined a shot to right center field to bring in the game winning run.  Alex Puglisi '14 (Shelton, NJ -- Trumbull) picked up the loss as she tossed 9 innings, giving up 5 runs, 1 being unearned.

Game two started with Alfred scoring the first 5 runs of the game, picking up runs in the third, fifth, and seventh innings.  Elmira would look to rally in the bottom of the seventh but would come up short as they scored one run on an RBI by Sarah Tarquino '13 (Schwenksville, PA -- Perkiomen Valley).

With the two losses Elmira drops to 8-14 overall and 4-10 in Empire 8 play.  EC will be back in action on Tuesday, May 3rd as they host the Express of Wells College in a non-conference game.  The opening pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Eldridge Park in Elmira, NY.
