Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team was firing on all cylinders as it defeated first year program Houghton College, 26-2, Friday afternoon at Elmira Free Academy in the season-opening contest for both teams.
The 26 goals scored marks the most by an Elmira team in at least the last 10 years. The closest an EC team has come to that mark in the last decade was March 31, 2010 when the team tallied 24 goals against Medaille.
David Evert '14 led the EC attack finishing with six goals and six assists, while
Brady Richards '14 added five goals and four assists.
Mike DeMar '15 (4),
Kyle Ludwig '16 (3) and
Eric Hallman'15 (2) all scored multiple goals for the Purple and Gold.
Ludwig also dished out four helpers for EC.
Elmira got out to a fast start leading 4-0 less than three minutes into the game after a pair of goals by
Richards and
Evert. Houghton got on the board to make it 4-1, but the Soaring Eagles responded with five straight scores, two of which came from
Evert. EC led 14-1 at intermission.
The Purple and Gold continued to dominate as it scored a span of 18 consecutive times to lead 22-1 early in the fourth quarter. The Highlanders would add another goal in the final stanza as Elmira cruised to the 26-2 victory.
Dave Bucchino '13 played the first half in net for Elmira making two saves and allowing just one goal.
Mike Knowlton '14 and
Nick Firda '16 split time between the pipes during the second half, combining to stop five shots and yield one score.
The Soaring Eagles held large advantages in shots on goal (35-9), ground balls (69-39) and clear percentage (18-22, 10-21). Elmira was able to score on both of its two extra man opportunities, while Houghton was unsuccessful in its only attempt. The Highlanders committed 36 turnovers, while EC turned it over 21 times. Meanwhile, Elmira caused 21 turnovers as a team compared to just eight for Houghton.
The Men's Lacrosse team hits the road for a Sunday non-conference contest against Franklin & Marshall College beginning at 12:00 p.m.
