Men’s Lax Outplayed in Loss to No. 6 Ducks

Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team was outmatched as it fell, 23-2, to Empire 8 power Stevens Institute of Technology Wednesday afternoon at Campus Field. The win improves the No. 6 Ducks to 10-2 and 4-0 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-9 and 0-4.

Stevens came out firing scoring the contest's first six goals, two from the stick of Rich Dupras. EC finally broke through with two minutes remaining in the opening quarter when Brian Conzola '14 fed classmate David Evert '14 who found the back of the net.

That score would be the last of the half for Elmira as the Ducks tallied six more unanswered goals, with two each coming from Harrison Dorne and Nicolas Philippi. The Ducks took a 12-1 lead into intermission.

Stevens continued its dominating play in the second half as the team outscored the Purple and Gold 11-1. Mike DeMar '15 registered an unassisted marker with one second remaining in the third frame which would prove to be the only EC goal in the half.

Dave Bucchino '13, Mike Knowlton '14 and Nick Firda '16 all split time in net for Elmira. Bucchino played three quarters making 13 saves. Knowlton tallied 11:01 of clock time in net stopping one shot, while Firda replaced him the final 3:59 in between the pipes. Stevens used four different goalies in Matthew Deiner, Austin Boyd, Ben Shaffer and Eric Heinowitz who combined to stop nine shots on the day.

John Bigelow '16 and DeMar paced Elmira with four ground balls apiece. Stevens saw 15 different players register a goal on the day and held large advantages in shots on goal (37-11), ground balls (48-23) and face-off wins (19-8). The Ducks went 5-for-7 on extra man opportunities, while EC went 0-for-3.

The Men's Lacrosse team returns to action Saturday when it hosts Utica College beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Campus Field where it will recognize its four seniors on Class of 2013 Recognition Day.
