Elmira, NY – The Elmira College Men's Lacrosse team played with great energy in the opening 30 minutes but scored just once after halftime in a 15-7 loss to visiting Utica College Saturday afternoon on Campus Field. The win improves the Pioneers to 8-5 overall and 3-3 in Empire 8 play, while the loss drops the Soaring Eagles to 1-10 and 0-5.
Elmira came out of the gates on fire as
Brian Conzola '14 assisted
Eric Hallman '15 for a score just 1:17 into the contest.
Conzola then scored back-to-back unassisted markers in a 32 second span to open up a 3-0 lead in favor of the hosts. Utica retaliated with a pair of goals over the next two minutes.
The Soaring Eagles closed out the first quarter as
Brady Richards '14 caused a turnover in the Pioneer's defensive end and quickly picked up a ground ball beating Utica goalie Trey Adams for the man-up score.
Conzola then made a great pass finding teammate
Jackson Correia '14 as EC led 5-2 after the first quarter.
The Pioneers controlled the second stanza scoring four of the five markers in the frame. Four different players found the back of the net for Utica including two goals coming on extra-man opportunities. The Purple and Gold's lone goal came off an unassisted tally from
Christian Archambeault '14. The team's played to a 6-6 tie at intermission led by a strong outing from
Conzola tallying two goals and two assists.
Utica completely dictated play in the second half as it outscored the Soaring Eagles 9-1 after halftime. TJ Benson and Justin Edelstein each scored two apiece in the half for the Pioneers.
Archambeault recorded the lone EC goal off a pass from
David Evert '14 with the man advantage.
Senior
Dave Bucchino '13 had a remarkable performance in his final home game in the Purple and Gold stopping a career-high 27 shots. Adams made four saves in the win for Utica.
Conzola led Elmira with five ground balls, while Tom Bryne paced the Pioneers with a game-high 10 ground balls.
Elmira College honored its members of the Class of 2013 prior to today's contest.
