Men’s Lax Surrenders Eight Goals in Final Frame of 16-8 Loss

Pittsford, NY – The Men's Lacrosse team played nearly even with host St. John Fisher College for three periods but gave up eight scores in the final frame en route to a 16-8 loss Wednesday afternoon at Growney Stadium. The Soaring Eagles drop to 1-6 overall and 0-1 in Empire 8 play, while the Cardinals improve to 8-2 and 2-0.

Fisher got on the board first just 1:06 into the contest but Elmira responded a minute and a half later as Brian Conzola '14 scored his fourth goal of the season. The Cardinals regained the lead at 2-1 with 9:30 remaining in the opening period after Nick Rossi netted his 13th score of the year. The Soaring Eagles battled back as a Christian Archambeault '14 score off a pass from Conzola tied the game at two all at the end of the first quarter.

The Cardinals responded with three straight goals in the first seven minutes of the second frame, two from the stick of Michael Boisvert to open up a 5-2 lead. However, the Purple and Gold proved their mental toughness scoring three times in the final 3:09 of the first half. Mike DeMar '15 scored his sixth and seventh goals of the year, with both passes coming from Conzola. David Evert'14 added the other marker for EC.

Despite being outshot 29-7 and trailing 15-6 in shots on goal in the first 30 minutes Elmira was tied on the scoreboard 5-5 at intermission.

Fisher got off to a quick start out of halftime as Jeff Wester tallied his 22nd marker of the season just 1:02 out of break. Five minutes later the Cardinals added another score as they pushed their lead to 7-5 midway through the third quarter. Tyler Campbell '13 netted his sixth of the year off a pass from Brady Richards '14 with 5:54 left in the third to make it 7-6. Fisher added another score to finish the third quarter with a slim, 8-6 lead.

The fourth quarter proved to be all Cardinals as they outplayed Elmira to the score of 8-2 in the final 15 minutes of play. The Soaring Eagle scores in the period came from Campbell and Richards as Fisher cruised to the 16-8 victory.

Dave Bucchino '13 finished with 15 saves in net for Elmira, while Jamie Campagna, M.P. Joseph, and Zach Knight combined to make three saves in goal for the Cardinals. Fisher held advantages in shots on goal (31-11), faceoff wins (22-6), ground balls (39-17), and caused turnovers (8-4).
