Box Score
Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team (2-1) used four answered goals over the final 13:27 of regulation to pull away from visiting King's College (0-3) for a 10-6 victory.
Moorea Spoljaric '16,
Jessica Blinkinsop '15, and
Natalie Robinson '15 each had three goals in today's contest.
King's College, playing with no substitutes, instilled a slow-paced game-plan from the opening draw. The Monarchs executed their methodical approach to near perfection in the early goings as Amanda Harney put two goals on the board to take a 2-0 lead with 25:09 to play in the first half.
The Soaring Eagles regrouped after falling behind early and started to pick up the pace offensively. The results were in EC's favor as Elmira scored five straight goals within a nine minute stretch to take a 5-2 lead. Of the five goals, Blinkinsop and Robinson each had two. The Purple and Gold, however, would go quiet for the final 14:37 of the first half as Monarch goalie, Courtney Stefanik, made a handful of impressive saves to keep EC's total at five. King's would tack on two goals before the break, making it a 5-4 game at halftime.
Robinson scored the first goal of the second half, her third of the day, with 23:47 left in regulation, but King's would not go away. The Monarchs scored back-to-back goals, just 50 seconds apart from one another, to tie the game at six and force EC Head Coach
Katie Augustine-Moore to call a timeout.
Following the timeout, the Soaring Eagles upped their level of play on both ends of the field. EC's defensive intensity limited the attempts that King's had while Elmira's ball movement on the offensive end began to tire the Monarchs out. Spoljaric netted a free position goal with 13:27 to play, kick-starting the final run.
EC continued to put their foot on the gas as newcomer
Kylie Connell '17 registered her first goal of the game. Connell, who had an assist earlier in the contest, had her initial shot saved by the stick of Stefanik, but the rebound came right back to her and she was able to fire it home. Connell's goal gave Elmira an 8-6 lead with just over 10 minutes left in the second half. Blinkinsop and Spoljaric each scored their third goals of the afternoon late in the second half to seal EC's 10-6 victory.
The Soaring Eagles will return to action on March 18th when they host the University of Rochester. The game is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Elmira Free Academy.
