Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College men's tennis team opens up a four-match homestand this Friday, March 11th, when the Soaring Eagles host D'Youville College at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome at 4:30 p.m. Elmira concludes the weekend with a Saturday rematch against Oswego State at 1:00 p.m.
Last Time OutElmira saw its three-match win streak come to an end last time out, as the Soaring Eagles dropped a 9-0 final on the road to Liberty League foe, RIT. The Soaring Eagles were unable to hang with the Tigers, who won 72-of-84 games played at the Gordon Field House.
Chris Konow '18 was Elmira's top performer on the day, as the second-year talent finished with the most games won (9).
Home Cookin'After suffering a setback against RIT, Elmira will be chomping at the bit to return to the friendly confines of its home courts at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome. Elmira has proven to be a difficult matchup on its home courts this season with a 3-1 record. Past seasons have also shown how tough the Soaring Eagles are at the MAC, as the Elmira men are 15-9 over the last four seasons, including an 8-3 mark since the 2014-15 season.
Scouting the SpartansD'Youville College is still in search of its first win of the 2016 season, as the Spartans enter the weekend with an 0-4 record. Aside from a 5-4 season-opening loss to Pitt-Bradford, the Spartans have struggled to stay competitive with a pair of 7-2 losses, as well as a 9-0 loss in their most recent outing against Oswego State. D'Youville's first doubles tandem of Wei Yen Huang and John Nazzarett look like they could be a tough matchup for Elmira. The Spartan duo own a 2-2 record this season with wins against Pitt-Bradford and Penn State-Behrend.
Scouting the LakersOswego State is off to one of its best starts in recent memory, as the Lakers enter the weekend with a 5-1 record. The Lakers opened the 2015-16 season with five consecutive wins, including a fall season victory over a depleted Elmira squad, 7-2. However, Oswego did taste defeat for the first time just a few days ago, as the Lakers dropped a tight 5-4 decision to Houghton College, a team they had beaten 6-3 in the fall. Sam McGrath has enjoyed a stellar start to his collegiate career, as the rookie talent boasts flawless records in singles (6-0) and doubles (6-0). Senior Alex McCarthy has also been a key player for the Lakers, as his overall record stands at 9-1 on the year, with his only loss coming against Alfred University's Connor Doud.
Looking AheadElmira returns to action next Saturday, March 19th, when the Soaring Eagles host Keuka College at 12:00 p.m. at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome.
