Elmira, NY -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team will conclude the 2016 campaign when the Soaring Eagles host Stevens Institute of Technology on Saturday, April 30th, at 1:00 p.m. on Campus Field.
Senior Day
As today's game marks the regular season finale, the Soaring Eagles will honor the graduating seniors of the Class of 2016:
Moorea Spoljaric '16,
Laura Powell '16,
Kara Yakel '16,
Ali Barber '16 and
Hannah Rafalowski-Houseman '16. We would like to thank this group for everything they have contributed to the women's lacrosse team and the EC community throughout their careers.
Last Time Out
Elmira rebounded from its overtime loss to conference foe Hartwick College by handing the Hawks of Hilbert College an 18-5 blowout. After Hilbert tied the game at 1-1 early in the first half, the Soaring Eagles scored 13 straight to take a commanding lead. Defensively, the Purple and Gold didn't give the Hawks much of a chance to settle down in the offensive zone, especially in the first half. The home squad only attempted six shots in the entire game, the first time in over two seasons that EC has limited an opponent to a single-digit shot total.
Moorea Spoljaric '16 led the Soaring Eagles with six goals and one assist for seven points, followed by
Hayley Baker '19 with four points on two goals and two assists. In all, 10 different players scored a goal and 11 registered at least one point.
Freshman Phenom
With her four points against the Hawks, first-year attacker
Hayley Baker '19 upped her season point total to 40, second-most on the team this season. Her 40 points make her the highest-scoring Elmira rookie since Lindsay Mitchell '12 led EC with 44 points in 2009. It's worth noting that Mitchell would go on to become the third all-time leading scorer in program history.
First Career Goal
In the big win over Hilbert, three Soaring Eagles netted the first goals of their respective EC careers.
Ali Barber '16, a two-year starter on defense for the Purple and Gold after transferring to Elmira for the 2014-15 academic year, saw plenty of action in the attacking zone on Thursday and scored twice.
Kiersta Pino '18 and
Matilda Kennedy-Butler '19 joined the party by finding the back of the net for the first time in their debut seasons.
Spoljaric Scores Another Milestone
The season
Moorea Spoljaric '16 has turned in thus far has been one for the ages. The standout midfielder from Saugerties, NY, had already captured program records for the most career goals, most single-season goals, and most single-season points. Her name now sits atop the list of all-time point getters, as Spoljaric's seven points against Hilbert moved her past Katya Outwater '07 (210) for first place. The senior captain has amassed 215 points in her remarkable four-year career at Elmira, with one more game to boost her total.
All-Time Series
Elmira and Stevens have squared off every season since 2008, the year that the Ducks joined the Empire 8 Conference. In the eight years since, Stevens has compiled an 8-0 all-time record against the Soaring Eagles.
Scouting Stevens
The Ducks enter their 2016 regular season finale riding a two-game win streak. On April 17th, Stevens overcame an 8-6 deficit to hand then-No. 17 St. John Fisher College a 9-8 loss, with the game-winner coming inside the final minute. In their most recent game, the Ducks throttled Hartwick College 16-4 on April 23rd, improving to 5-2 inside Empire 8 Conference play. Reigning E8 Player of the Year Erika Wilcox has made her statement to repeat as the conference's top award winner by registering team highs with 60 goals and 69 points. Wilcox trails only
Moorea Spoljaric '16 in the E8 in goals per game (4.00) and points per game (4.60). In 2015, the Baldwinsville, NY, product finished with 73 goals and 96 points en route to Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) First-Team All-America honors. Wilcox should be well prepared for today's contest, as she has equaled her season high with six goals in each of her last two games and a season-high eight points against Hartwick. Stephanie Schnelzer has played the lion's share of minutes in goal for the Ducks, recording a 7.31 goals-against average and a .475 save percentage.
