Women's Lacrosse Heads to Houghton for Final Game of 2017

ELMIRA, N.Y. -- The Elmira College women's lacrosse team will conclude the 2017 regular season with an Empire 8 Conference bout against Houghton College on Saturday, April 29, at 3:00 p.m.

After going nearly five minutes without a goal, the Cardinals capitalized following an Elmira yellow card to score the first of what turned into a 5-0 spurt in a span of 1:46. The Purple and Gold fell behind by nine before Hayley Baker '19 ended the drought with 6:08 remaining in the first half. The 5-foot-9-inch attacker also netted Elmira's second goal, which came at the 17:44 mark of the second half. On defense, Kelcey Crawford '18 caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls, while goalie Lindsay Wargo '17 registered 11 saves.

HUGHSON CAUSING HAVOC: Third-year midfielder Sarah Hughson '18 has been a force to be reckoned with in 2017, as she enters the season finale with a team-leading and career-high 30 caused turnovers despite having played in only 12 of EC's 14 games. She's caused three-or-more turnovers on six occasions, including a career-high seven against Cazenovia on March 25 and six in a victory over SUNY Canton on April 23. Throughout her three-year collegiate career the East Haddam, Connecticut, native has accumulated 70 caused turnovers, a figure that is tied with Marissa Mongillo '15 for seventh-most in program history.

With 155 stops during her sophomore campaign and 127 this year, Wargo possesses two of the top-six highest single-season save totals by a Soaring Eagle.

SCOUTING HOUGHTON:  The Highlanders enter Saturday's contest coming off of a 17-6 drubbing of E8 member Alfred University. Houghton opened the game on an 8-0 run, tallying twelve goals in the first half. Houghton is 2-4 over the last six contests, four of which came against Empire 8 competition. Overall, the Highlanders have not seen much of a home field advantage this season, as the squad has posted a 1-6 record at Burke Field. Houghton lays claim to the conference's top goal scorer in Jennifer Zacchinga, who averages 5.36 goals per game.
