Ayaka Yoshino '16 concluded the women’s tennis regular season with a career performance of her own by cementing her name in the Elmira record books as the program’s all-time leader in career wins. She finished the 2015 campaign with 73 total wins, ranking first all-time in singles victories (37) and second in doubles (36).
The Yokohama, Japan, native broke the wins record by sweeping her two matches against the Houghton College Highlanders in the penultimate match of the season on Saturday. Yoshino and Ellen Plowman ’16 blanked the Houghton duo of Bethany Chesebro and Tori Noller at first doubles, 8-0. Yoshino then beat Chesebro at first singles, 6-2, 6-2.
In the 2015 regular-season finale against Alfred University on Sunday, Yoshino and Plowman topped the Saxons’ top team of Rachel Cook and Emma Jackson, 8-5. The fourth-year star then scored a first singles victory over Cook, 6-2, 6-4.
Yoshino end her senior season with a 9-2 mark at first singles and an 8-3 record at first doubles. This week’s award marks the third time the perennial All-Empire 8 Conference honoree has been named an EC Athlete of the Week this fall (9/7; 9/21).
