Olivia Nystrom '16 opened the EC women's hockey season tied for the team lead in points with four, as she netted two goals with two assists in the East-West Classic at Norwich University. She was one of two Soaring Eagles named to East-West Classic All-Tournament Team.
In the season-opening loss to No. 6 Adrian on Saturday, Nystrom assisted on the Purple and Gold's only tally, a short-handed score by Louisa Lippiatt Durnell '18 in the third period. She then helped the Soaring Eagles bounce back in the consolation game of the tournament with a pair of goals and an assist on the game-winner, as EC beat No. 4 Norwich, 7-2, on Sunday. The five-goal margin of victory was Elmira's most lopsided road win against the Cadets in program history.
The Vaxholm, Sweden, native scored at the 5:58 mark in the opening period to give the Soaring Eagles an early 1-0 advantage. She then assisted on the eventual game-winner, scored by Johanna Eidensten '17 at 10:15 of the first period. Nystrom concluded her scoring with a short-handed tally of her own in the third period. Eidensten forwarded the puck to Nystrom in the neutral zone, who beat a Norwich defender one-on-one with a quick stick move and toe drag before back-handing a puck over the Cadets' netminder. Her second goal gave EC a 6-2 lead.
The second-ranked Elmira College women's hockey team will return to action after a two-week break to host SUNY Cortland at the Murray Athletic Center on Friday, November 13th, at 7:00 p.m.
