Carter Shinkaruk '16 scored three goals in a pair of games against No. 11 Hobart College, as the Soaring Eagles and Statesmen split the weekend series. Saturday's 4-3 win over Hobart marked EC's first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since beating No. 13 Utica, 5-2, in the 2013-14 ECAC West Tournament Championship.
The Langley, BC, native scored twice in Friday's 5-3 defeat. His first goal midway through the second period cut the Hobart lead in half. He then found the back of the net again with two minutes remaining in the third period, as Elmira frantically attempted a comeback. In Saturday's 4-3 upset, the senior forward scored just over five minutes into the opening period. The tally gave the Purple and Gold a quick 2-0 advantage as part of a three-goal first period, as the Soaring Eagles handed Hobart its first ECAC West Conference loss of the year.
Through the first six games of the season, Shinkaruk leads Elmira and is tied atop the ECAC West leaderboard with six goals and tied for sixth in goals per game (1.00). He is also tied for fourth place in the conference in points with seven.
The Elmira men's ice hockey team will return to action this weekend, as EC hosts Amherst College on Saturday, November 28th at 3:00 p.m. On Sunday, the Soaring Eagles welcome Babson College to the Murray Athletic Center for a 3:00 p.m. contest.
