In the season-opening EC Invitational, Ryan McDonough '18 paced the No. 12 Elmira men's volleyball program to a perfect 3-0 start. EC swept Ramapo College and the College of Mount Saint Vincent in straight sets on January 22nd before beating No. 15 Mount St. Joseph University in a five-set thriller.
In the first match of his collegiate career, McDonough registered seven kills and a .294 attack percentage. The best outing of the three-match weekend tournament was against the Dolphins, as the outside hitter from Lindenhurst, NY, struck for 10 kills on 16 total attacks, equaling a .438 attack percentage. He also served four aces, recorded four block assists and six digs in the straight-set win over Mount Saint Vincent.
McDonough recorded double-digit kills again on Saturday, as he finished one shy of the team lead with 13 against the nationally-ranked Lions. Four of his kills came in the decisive fifth set, including the match-winning point to give EC a 16-14 set five victory.
Through the first weekend of the season, McDonough leads the Soaring Eagles with 30 kills and five aces and sits second on the team with eight total blocks.
No. 12 Elmira heads to Owings Mills, MD, for the Stevenson Invitational this weekend, beginning with a 7:00 p.m. match against Medaille College on Friday, January 29th.
