Mansell was fantastic in helping the Soaring Eagles sweep all three matches at the Elmira College Spring Kickoff Invitational, held at the Murray Athletic Center Tennis Dome, this past weekend. EC began the three-day event with an 8-1 victory over Farmingdale State College this past Friday, February 19th. The Purple and Gold dispatched Purchase College 7-2 on Saturday night, before downing Alfred University by an 8-1 line on Sunday morning.
Â
The West Lebanon, NH, native had gotten off to a slow start to his final collegiate campaign, entering the weekend with a 1-2 mark at the third singles position and a 0-3 doubles record, granted the majority of that coming in cross divisional competition. The senior netter made that slow start a distant memory this past weekend, sweeping all three of his singles and doubles matches in a perfect 6-0 weekend.
Â
Continuing to hold down the third singles position, Mansell easily dispatched Daniel Kafka of Farmingdale State 6-2, 6-1 to begin the weekend. He backed up that victory up with a 6-1, 6-4 triumph over Danny De La Cruz of Purchase on Saturday, before rolling to a clean 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Mike Wisniewski of Alfred on Sunday.
Â
A partner change also seemed to play a big role in igniting Mansell’s performance in doubles play. After the team posted a rocky start in doubles action the past few weeks, head coach Tom Linhart shook up the tandems ahead of this past weekend. The results spoke for themselves, as the Soaring Eagles went 8-for-9 in doubles matchups over the weekend. Mansell thrived with new partner Chris Konow ’18, as the tandem scored 8-3 victories on both Friday and Saturday, and an 8-4 win on Sunday.
Â
With the perfect 6-0 weekend, Mansell moved all-alone into third place on the program’s all-time list for both total career wins (51) and career doubles victories (24). Mansell and the Soaring Eagles will look to continue their hot play in two weeks when the team returns to action against the Rochester Institute of Technology at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 8th.
